Roman Port of Mogontiacum (modern day Mainz) (1 Viewer)

Hey gang

Just wanted to post some very very preliminary pictures of a diorama I am working on using FL and TGM Romans. It is a fictional depiction of the Roman port of Mogontiacum (Mainz), Germany. The table size is 4'x4'. I am thinking of using some simple blue "water" train diorama mat material to represent the water the ship is in. I used some grass scraps on the inside of the Roman fort but I believe I will probably go with cobblestone instead.

Feel free to compliment or criticize!

Had to wrestle with a few things here. Initially I was going to do a Port of Alexandria scene using the Roman War Galley and KC'S Egyptians but that fell through. With prices being what they are, I can no longer afford full plywood sheet dioramas (8'x4') like I could in the past ( I can but at the expense of collecting other ranges!! Plus, space is a bit of an issue as well ). So I scaled this one back to 4'x4'.

I was going to put a jetty protruding out from the gate but it would smack right into the RWG. Still haven't given up on that idea however. I think I just may move the RWG further downstream and do it. On the ship will be several of the FL and TGM "at rest" Romans. I am considering snagging a few of the new FL Greeks as well- merc's in the service of the Eagle! and put them on the RWG.

In the fort itself, the Gate actually aids in breaking down the display space. To one "half", I am going to buildup a parade unit of the first issue of FL Praetorians passing in review in front of Marcus Aurelius. The other half will feature some of the FL Roman Camp Life command set figures as well the civilians. Various other FL Roman Camp Life civilians can be placed near some of the small buildings and what not doing odd chores. Then "At rest" legionaires will be manning the walls.

Lastly, I picked up some barrels, crates and other stowage sets from Build a rama. I will either put that stuff on the ship itself or on the jetty if I go that route.

Money and space is a constant hinderance in this hobby. The Galley and port would be the main focus if I were to embark on this. You might find some ideas for crew on the Galley in my diorama thread a few pages back on ' Time on my hands at last'. This is one specular boat which would go a long way to assist in making the overall diorama a 'wow' factor. You will find as you go suddenly things will fall into place as you study every aspect they become more obvious. A little of trial and error also works to get the best result. Robin.

OK, it's not just me. Yeah, if you had a free account at Photobucket, Chris, you no longer have third-party hosting of images. Even if you paid for a subscription, as I had, we no longer have it, unless we opt for their $500 a year account. I can't even access my images on their website anymore; I get a popup telling me my account has expired (it has), and directing me to subscribe to their newer, more expensive paid subscriptions (there are two that cost less than $500 a year, but they are just for storage!).

I started using Postimage last year. They do not charge for hosting (for now), and it's a relatively simple site to use. However, it is a little bare-bones, with no editing features. Since I do my editing on my laptop, though, it's not an issue. But there are other hosts, naturally, some that don't charge, some that do. A couple of my friends are using Fotki, which is a subscription site, but they say it's relatively cheap, while offering good service.

With this particular thread, it's only a couple of images, so it won't be that much work to edit the posts with different link URLs (though a moderator would have to, at this point). If it were a longer and older thread, like my thread on Frederick the Great's army, it's a wash, just easier to start a whole new one, when the links are snuffed out.
