Hi,

I recently bought a number of European books which may be of interest to other members on this forum. The illustrations are terrific and the foreign text can be overcome with a good translator.

First up is a glossy French language magazine from the newsstand. This featured a terrific article by a master modeler.

Here is an Italian book translated as " The Sword of Radetzky - The Imperial armies from the Restoration to the Revolution 1836 -1849".
The drawings of the post-Napoleonic Austrian army are just wonderful! It's a great primer to another unusual period.

Another Italian book containing numerous coloured photos of soldiers taken at the turn of the century. This gives a realistic view of how uniforms were actually worn.

Some great illustrations there. I’d love to collect magazines and books like this.

I'll second Vicknor, Vic, that's a great haul for your library.

I like the books particularly. They cover periods and subjects that aren't represented too thoroughly in solid figures. Unless a person is interested in flats, he might not ever see a Sardinian heavy cavalry trooper, for example.

Does this give us a hint at some of your future projects?

Prost!

Hello Darren and Brad,

Thanks for your inputs. This European trip has been terrific for me in terms of my purchases. Yes, I did get a lot of literature, many in a foreign text but they had such great pictures. The quality of the books was excellent as well.

Definitely inspirational for near future projects.

Here's one that I got from Florence. Translated as "The New Fashion from 500 to 600 (AD), it has great paintings and reconstructed costumes. There are photos of actual period fabric and weave as well. I like this level of detail as I hope to incorporate this in my miniatures.

Another one from a Florence bookstore which I got really cheap. A real bargain. A super hefty book!

Translated as "The Bourbon Army from 1789 to 1815", it contains numerous colour plates with great details! It will repay careful translation of the Italian text.

Here's more:

I got this Italian mag at a Venice newsstand. I went for the pictures as it gives me a great intro into numerous Italian battles and wars.

A French book featuring a military artist Albert Blighny. Got this from the Pompidou.

A small book on the Bersaglieri Corps. This one has English text and captions. Nice drawings.

Here is a very nice and hefty costume book that I got at the Palazzo Mocenigo, Venice. http://mocenigo.visitmuve.it/en/home/

It had rooms fitted out in period and thematic style. Really worth a visit, in my opinion.

Empire style costumes. The book has numerous illustrations of period dress and mannequins dressed as such. Italian text though.

I thought I had seen almost all the Napoleonic books worth having but, of course, there's always another one. Got this at the Musee de Armee.
How could I resist?

At Versailles, there is a great collection of all the Berlines and other carriages that you can imagine. The guidebook is in French with lots of intriguing pictures but I supplement that with my own photos and other books. Only for the spokes counter....:)

Of course the biggie in Paris was the Musee de Armee.. Surprisingly, the guidebook was in English! The photos are terrific.

Since I have quite a number of these great illustrations on the Italian Ejercito and Risorgimento, I dug out an old copy of Garibaldi (never read) Blandford Press to start delving into Italian History. The book has no colour illustrations inside.
