I picked this up in a second-hand bookshop in Abu Dhabi some time ago. I've no idea if its still available but I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who's interested in the colonial wars of the Victoria period.
Extremely well written, educational, and entertaining all at the same time.

Byron Farwell is one of the easiest historians to read . . . he writes really enjoyable prose and knows how to tell stories as well as impart facts. In addition to QVLW, his books include "The Gurkhas", "Prisoners of the Mahdi", "Mr. Kipling's Army" and "Great Victorian Soldiers", all of which I highly recommend. And Heid, if you would like copies of these other books, let me know and I will get them for you.

Harry,

I too think he is a great writter I have several of his books and Will add that Armies of the Raj is also quite well done and very informative. I am sure you will enjoy his work a great deal.

All the best

Dave

I had never heard of him until I read this book. I'll be left to my own devices in Dubai on Friday and Saturday, so I'll have a hunt through the bookshops down at Jumeriah Beach and see if I can find the ones that both yourself and Dave have mentioned.
Groan, I can already see airline weight restrictions on my luggage being an issue in 5 weeks time......:eek:
Cheers
