A few years ago I bought this set of Tradition of London Model Soldier castings from an Aussie EBay seller who was offering them at a ridiculous asking price that was too good not to bid on. It isn't a period I collect, but I won and now I have finally completed the assembly and painting of them.

There are 3 French Foreign Legionnaires and 6 attacking Mexicans and I have now posed them with a ruined farm building that I hope will pass as La Trinidad Hacienda in Camerone ??

The Battle of Camarón which occurred over ten hours on 30 April 1863 between the French Foreign Legion and the Mexican army, is regarded as a defining moment in the Foreign Legion's history.
A small infantry patrol, led by Captain Jean Danjou and Lieutenants Clément Maudet and Jean Vilain, numbering just 65 men was attacked and besieged by a force that may have eventually reached 3,000 Mexican infantry and cavalry, and was forced to make a defensive stand at the nearby Hacienda Camarón, in Camarón de Tejeda, Veracruz, Mexico.

The conduct of the Legion, who refused to surrender, led to a certain mystique, and the battle of Camarón became synonymous with bravery and a fight-to-the-death attitude.

This scene depicts the battle at 18:00, with ammunition exhausted, the last of Danjou's men, numbering only five, including Lt. Maudet, desperately mounted a bayonet charge. Two men fell outright, and the rest were surrounded. One of them, Victor Catteau, had leapt in front of Maudet in an effort to protect him, and died in the Mexican barrage. Mexican Major Campos ordered the Legionnaires to surrender to which Corporal Phillipe Maine answered, "We will surrender if you leave us our weapons and our equipment. You also have to promise to take care of our wounded lieutenant." When Campos brought the trio to Milán, he asked, "Is this all of them? Is this all of the men who are left?" Then, in amazement, he exclaimed, "These are not men! They are demons!"

These look fabulous. Never heard of the story, but it is a great narrative.

There is loads of info on this incident ...

Wiki of course, but this one on a French Foreign Legion website is very comprehensive: http://foreignlegion.info/battle-of-camerone/

A very interesting aspect is about Capt Danjou's hand ......

Captain Danjou’s wooden hand

In Algeria in early May 1853, Captain Jean Danjou lost his left hand during a topographical expedition, when he was giving a signal gunshot and the canon of his musket exploded. Because of that, he wore a precisely-made wooden hand instead.

This wooden hand was stolen at the hacienda by a Mexican as a souvenir and wasn’t discovered until 1865, when an Austrian officer Grueber of the Austrian Legion (allies of France) found it in a ranch, bought it and handed it over to Marshal Bazaine, then the chief of the French forces in Mexico and a former NCO (and an officer) with the Foreign Legion. Thereafter, the hand was transferred to Algeria, to the HQ of the Legion.

Today, the wooden hand of Captain Jean Danjou is paraded annually on Camerone Day in Aubagne, the Legion’s current HQ in southern France, carried by a designated veteran – a legionnaire, NCO or an officer. To be designated to carry the wooden hand of Captain Danjou during Camerone Day is seen as the most deserved honor for any veteran of the French Foreign Legion.

Very nice. A set like this in any style, or even painted myself i son my list.

It has taken me about 6 months, but I have now completed a small diorama so that I can display these figures with a more realistic base.

I fell as though I need some more debris around the building, so that will keep me occupied trying to find stuff to use, like barrels, wood etc?

Any thoughts??
