    The Hobbit...

I'd read the same thing about the scouring of the Shire having been deleted from the final cut. Also, that Lee was the only one on the movie set who had actually met & associated with Tolkien, which meant that he was even more miffed when the scouring scene had been cut out. And, why, in any...

La Science et guerre : Dévoilement Egypte

I'd highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to know more about the savants who accompanied Napoleon. Thanks for the dio, as it combines my own taste for Ancient Egypt & Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.

My BOM dio - A work in progress

Thanks for sharing your dio. Stripped of any scenery, it stands on its own as an attempt to convey the brutality and horror of that event. With Braddock's men so densely packed together, you've certainly conveyed the sense of desperation.

    Napoleon in Italy

I'd recommend "Napoleon Bonaparte's First Campaign," by Herbert H. Sargent.

    Favorite Del Prado Line

I've been flirting with the idea of getting their Ancient Egyptian market scene. Has anyone else gotten a set? If so, how does it compare with the K & C Ancient Egyptians?

Want to buy Heyde Toy Soldiers

It just so happens that Mohawk Arms is auctioning off several sets of Heydes this weekend. Go to their website at www.militaryrelics.com. My wife & I had a chance to look over the figures some months ago when we visited the auction house. Although I'm not a Heyde collector, I'd recommend these...

    War of 1812

Thanks for posting this. The article nicely encapsulates the War of 1812, especially from the often-neglected Canadian perspective.

    Napoleonic Trivia #51

A close second, then, would be Lt. Markiewicz of the Polish Light-Horse, who was born in Cracow in 1794 & was still living in 1902.

All Quiet on the Western Front - silent version

Maltin's "Classic Movie Guide" says, "also shown in 131 minute version, edited separately in 1930, using alternate shots; it offers a different perspective on this classic." I haven't seen this version, but I certainly want to, as the 1930 sound one is still my favorite. There's a new version...

Blogs "The BS Historian" "Bad Archaeology"

Kind of you to put that one up from Jimmy Hatlo. Your original blog postings also reminded me of something that Arsenio Hall used to say on his show.........."the things that make you go 'hmmmmm'."

Blogs "The BS Historian" "Bad Archaeology"

Thanks & a Hatlo Hat Tip (ask your parents) for the blogs. I taught many histories over the span of 30+years and, if I wasn't up against students referencing the "newspapers" up by the cash registers, I was up against The History Channel (so-called). Often, I'd hear, "it must be true, because...

It's hard to be British in America

For a different type of American Southern, try those who speak Gullah, primarily around the Sea Islands of South Carolina & Georgia. Many know about the Cajuns, but I never knew many outside of certain areas in the South who knew much about the Gullah (also known as Geechee). Accents are one...

    WTB Egyptian house.

Glad that you at least bought the shelter, as it lends itself to several Egyptian scenes. Some books do show the models of Egyptian homes that were found in tombs and some websites show you architects' layouts of Egyptian homes. I used to have some interesting sites bookmarked, but they were...

    WTB Egyptian house.

If you can find the house, you won't be disappointed. For reference, check out "What Life Was Like On the Banks Of The Nile," by Time-Life Books. On page 20, you'll see an artist's drawing of a Middle Kingdom home that is almost identical to the JG Miniature home that you seek. Good hunting!

    Hurricane Irene

I went through Donna, a category 5, in 1960. Didn't notice any panic then. I'm in direct contact with friends & relatives along the Atlantic Seaboard; no panic. The media love a good distraction.......... SQUIRREL!!!!!!.....and then, just as quickly, they'll move one to something else, like...
