    JJD Advent Calendar 2025

Morgan's rifle corps were certainly known for their sharpshooting prowess, especially against British officers. There were others. I appreciate your comments/perspective.

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

I can name two to start with, both being extensively interviewed in the series without being woke/anti-American unlike K Burns. Rick Atkinson (Pulitzer Prize for his WWII volume) has the first two books of his trilogy on the War released. And Joseph Ellis, author of quite a few books on the...

    NCAA Football 2024

History repeats itself at Ole Miss. In 1998, Tommy Tuberville said "They'll have to carry me out of here in a pine box", in reference to not leaving to coach at another school. Less than a week later, it was announced that he was departing for Auburn. He left Ole Miss before their bowl game...

    Things that annoy me

Candy is a good analogy for JFK, the White House was like one big candy store for him.

    Things that annoy me

Thankful we have Second Amendment rights. A British IT consultant says he lived through a dystopian nightmare after being arrested for posting photos of himself holding firearms during a trip to the United States. People in the UK filed complaints with the police after feeling threatened.

    Things that annoy me

Getting charged $1,200 on my credit card for a limousine service that I did not use. I once had a cc that asked me to confirm a purchase for gas whenever out of my local area. But didn't hear a word when someone made a $10K charge (yes that's with a K).

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

Having read many books on the subject, I was looking fwd to this series very much but sorely disappointed. The denigration of colonial Americans in general and our Founding Fathers in particular was distracting to say the least. I had to force myself to watch the last two episodes and became...

The Secret Hidden Beneath Hitler's House

I visited the Berghof site in 1980. You could still peer into an opening in the foundation and see the basement. All I saw at that time was concrete walls. Thanks for posting.

Schiff is a Pulitzer Prize winner for a bio of Mrs. Vladimir Naboko (most of us whom never heard of). She also wrote a bio of Samuel Adams.

Cannot imagine anyone cover this Conflict- The War of 1932

You should also read about the war on the rabbits which also included fencing and "mass destruction."

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

Some of those I had not heard of but sound interesting. I often read books that are primary references of books I particularly like. So I have just ordered Letters of Eliza Wilkinson, mentioned during the series, a SC low country resident during the British occupation and initially pro-British...

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

On a less controversial note, which historians have piqued your interest? I've read many, if not all books by J Ellis and R Atkinson, HW Brands from Burns' B Franklin series seem promising.

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

Brad, I read the lengthy Hogeland disputation, from which he projects a "who really cares?" position regarding the 1754 conference (and a denigration of B Franklin). Nevertheless, there is a clear, at least to me and others, a direct connection in the opening episode between the Six Nations...

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

That was his appeal I think. His three volume narrative is still riveting IMO, even if somewhat biased.

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

This is from a national columnist: "Why does Ken Burns wish his audience to believe untruths about the American Founding? To be fair, there is plenty to like in the first episode. It’s hard not to tell an inspiring story in covering this material. Burns is a skillful storyteller backed by a...

The American Revolution by Ken Burns

Watched episode two yesterday, yes I'm behind but was finishing two other series, and about the first hour centered on slavery and specifically regarding G Washington. Joseph Ellis, the prolificate author of early American History and oft interviewed historian on this series...
