(meant to post this in the suggestion box - my apologies)

I'm not talking about the real LRDG or SAS but rather the Americanized classic '60s series, Rat Patrol with Sgt. Troy and Moffitt.

Andy, would love for you to offer a single Jeep Willy (perhaps 2), the 4-person US team, and of coarse, Hauptmann Hans Deitrich.

I think this would be a keeper!

EDIT: you could even throw in a yellow US half track and school bus just for kicks...

Rob,
The desert war is not my collecting era ... BUT THAT ... is a classic TV series... that I have on DVD. In fact, the weather has been so bad here in Maine that I watch the entire 58 set just to try to get warm ...^&grin

If K&C came out with a RAT PATROL set of figures I would not hesitate to get those sets ... just because ....! {sm4}

Hey Larry, I purchased both seasons several years ago - have seen every episode a few times. Do you have a favorite episode?

I think it would make a great K&C movie/TV theme because the number of characters would be pretty limited.

Hey Rob .... Gee, ... my favorite ... :rolleyes2:.

Well, if you view the shows as pure entertainment and understand that there is very little fact then one of my tops episodes is:

"The Wildest Raid of All" .... that episode is so far out there, in terms of plausibility, that it is very enjoyable to watch the buffoonery of the German Army. They trick the entire German column to believe that a few Jeeps were an entire tank division ready to attack them ...^&grin

BUT GREAT STUFF back then .... AND NOW.

I remember that episode. They always carried loudspeakers when going on patrol.^&cool Never know when you need to sound like an armored division. And at the end of a mission it was back to base camp to down a few at the local club with one fellow soldier of each nationality. But I would buy the jeeps if offered. :wink2: Chris

As I have been hinting, and hopefully Andy will do it. Make the second figure be a semi standing one, with the figure holding on to the machinegun. Have an action pose. And of course the driver. If that ever gets done, It will be a hard temptation to buy two sets...

I liked that episode as well - loved the sounds of tanks to fool the Germans once again.

I also liked Blow Sky High in which the team is looking for the old river passage shortcut through the canyon. Deitrich befriends a blind girl who knows the route.

The episode with Moffitt's father is pretty good as well (Dare Devil Rescue)

Completely entertainment but some good stories and characters - now we just need them in K&C - The Desert Patrol (how about that for a name). :salute::

EDIT: on a side note, I always liked when the characters would throw a Molotov Cocktail on one of the yellow German vehicles (usually a halftrack) causing it to explode.
Deitrich would always wave the Germans ahead in some fashion with a single arm high above his head - his green shop goggles were classic!

Evening Wayne ... yup, that's the one. With NO disrespect to our British friends, this was a fun series. Hardly a shred of truth or fact in any of the episodes, but simply a fun program. Now, to be honest, at the time, I thought that it was 100% real to life action.

It came on TV at the same time as many of the other WWII programs like .... COMBAT ... 12 O'Clock High ... McHale's Navy ... BAA BAA Black Sheep (a bit later) ... Garrison's Gorillas [ Okay how many guy remember this TV series???] and of course (also a bit later) ... WORLD AT WAR.

Also consider the huge number of WWII "movies" that were release in the 60's - 70's.

Anyway ... a short or limited series of the the Rat Patrol Jeeps with their crews, of course Capt. Hans Dietrich and maybe a few others then mix them with the K&C AK series and you have a winner.

Or just get a Rat Patrol jeep and the VHS box and a mini-do right there.

Okay George, I'll send you my money tomorrow ....:wink2:

I well remember Garrison's Gorillas. It was the show developed to replace Combat!. It was the brainchild of the higher-ups at ABC to replace the still successful but expensive to produce Combat! with a cheaper but somewhat similar war show. It failed miserably. It was pushed so hard by ABC that Combat! was cancelled without notice after it's 5th season, thus Combat! never had a closing episode. The cast and everyone involved with Combat! were shocked and totally caught by surprise. It was a terrible decision. -- Al

Some Rat Patrol scenes were filmed right here in Las Vegas. In my youth there used to be a US made M-3 tank that sat on the lot at old ATF studios on Spring Mountain Road in Las Vegas. It was painted Afrika Korps desert tan and had all era symbols painted on it. Apparently the half track's claim to fame was many cameos on Rat Patrol. All we need is Eric Braden of soap opera fame who played a German officer named Hans Dietrich to show up trying to match wits with his enemy.

Eric Braeden of soap opera fame had a career before soaps under the name of Hans Gudegast. Before his starring turn on Rat Patrol, he appeared in several episodes of Combat! including one where he played a sniper stalking the squad. -- Al

The Rat Patrol may have been a hit in the US but certainly not in the UK. After only a couple of episodes were shown by the BBC, it was taken off following a mass of protests by 8th Army veterans.

Hey Graycap .... that is why is "asked for tolerance" in Post #9 so not to offend our British friends. :redface2:
I can understand why the 8th Veterans would be upset or offended.

If they made a TV series of WWII Pacific Island warfare, and showed the French Resistance taking Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Sipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and such, there would be an uproar in the US that you would hear in Capetown, S.A.

But as was mentioned here .... the show was all about fun and NOT any factual representation.

I suppose one of the problems was a generational thing. Perhaps for 8th Army veterans it was a bit too close to the actual events. I remember watching those episodes that were shown (in black and white) and quite enjoyed them. Interesting to see them now on YouTube - in colour!

Both seasons of Rat Patrol were filmed/produced in color. Combat, which had 5 seasons, was in B&W with the exception of the 5th season.

Critics (like my brother) point out that the B&W seasons of Combat were better because they allowed real-life war footage to be included in their one-hour episodes.
Rat Patrol; however, with only half hour episodes would include a shot of the Hogans Heroes guard tower from time-to-time (at least one episode that is), with the same exploding halftrack and school bus explosion scenes. I still liked Rat Patrol for the action and always enjoyed the desert warfare.

Now we just need to convince Andy/K&C to design a little Rat Patrol theme. ^&grin
