Hi Guys,
Over the weekend I’ve had quite a few emails and a couple of phone calls about our friend Capt. Dye and how we managed to have him attend our Texas Show...
Back in mid-1999 I got a call from an old pal Dan Gagliasso in Los Angeles suggesting that I meet up with Capt. Dye on my next LA trip. Dan knew I was a big fan of Dale’s work both behind and in front of the cameras on movies like “Platoon”...”Born On The 4th of July”...and, of course, “Saving Pvt. Ryan”. Naturally I jumped at the chance and we contacted Dale and agreed to meet up after that year’s “Chicago Show” when I would be in LA for several days.
Over a long steak dinner near Dale’s home we had a great time talking about movies, TV shows and our mutual time in the military. Dale, with the USMC and yours truly with the Royal Marines.
Dale informed us (Dan and me) that he was off to England early in the New Year to work on a major project that would occupy him for almost a year. Alas, he couldn’t tell us more but he gave me his contact number in the UK and suggested that if I was in the “Old Country” any time in 2000 then he would arrange a visit to the movie set and I could see for myself what was going on...and what he was up to!
Sadly, for me, that was the one year I was not in the UK!!! The “Secret Project”, was, of course, “BAND OF BROTHERS” and it is to my undying regret that I did not take Dale up on his very generous suggestion and invitation.
Since that time we have kept in touch and last year when his schedule allowed we met up again in Los Angeles, actually Santa Monica, and brought each other up to date on what we were doing at present and planning for the future. And that’s when, among many other things, the next “Texas Show” came up.
At that time Dale said he would love to do it, film and television work permitting, just contact him nearer the date. Which, a couple of weeks ago, we did and found a “Window of Opportunity” that allowed him to come back down to San Antonio, (one of his favorite cities) where he had filmed “Rough Riders”, the story of Teddy Roosevelt and his 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry in Cuba during the Spanish American War for American TV.
Another little point of interest for collectors is that K&C is working with Dale on designing and producing a figure of the man himself as part of a “Special Run” for release later in the year.
I have no hesitation in saying that Capt. Dale Dye is a great guy and great fun to be around and has a wealth of experience, knowledge and, often, very funny stories about the trials and tribulations of making the kind of movies and television series we all know and love. If you are coming to the Texas Show you are in for a very special treat!!!
Best wishes,
