“Listening to the Many… Listening to the Few” (1 Viewer)

Extremely pretentious I know but I couldn't find an appropriate quote from the book I'm currently reading although Obelix does make me laugh! {sm2}

That did make me laugh - made me think of the scene in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels when Steve Martin takes a bookmark out of a 'Mad' comic!

I think that's kind of what was being said by Michael that some see happiness as just taking what comes at any price and at any design stage whilst others won't accept or demand higher quality for the price.

With all this be happy and the strange tall poppy syndrome regurgitated it does seem a few want everyone to just take what is offered. The Orwell quote Jack uses whether its what he meant or not seems to me to suggest just get in line say everything in the garden is always rosy, every set is brilliant and bang on accurate or, your not happy!!!

Happiness and enjoying the hobby whilst wanting value, quality and accuracy have nothing whatsoever to do with each other.

So, seeing Orwell mentioned in a Toy soldier site for me, is less strange than actually discussing toy soldiers in all their good and bad points

Mitch

You have read too much into my quote - I spent some time trying to make Orwell's 'Four legs good, two legs bad' amusing and failed. I then googled 'Orwell quotes'. I am really worried now - could it be that I am not as funny as I think?{sm4}

Jack

Since we're on Orwell maybe Mitch thinks that telling the truth is a revolutionary act :tongue:

On the other hand, to paraphrase Orwell, maybe Mitch wants to be good but not too good and not quite all the time. Of course, that could describe many of us here.

Perhaps I should stop now {eek3} or someone will use the Big Eraser on me, which come to think about it must have been taken out of 1984. This Board is very Orwellian :D

Andy

When I suggest something I try not do it with entirely selfish reasoning. I'm aware that this is a business and therefore the perceived popularity must be considered.

I was really disappointed by the amount of people that responded to a Great War pole I did not so long ago and I'm beginning to think that there are few people out there in TS world that share my passion for the subject. Don't get me wrong, I know the likes of waynepoo and Rob feel the same but it's not as many as I hoped.

I've tried to establish a significant consensus but I don't have the clout that you command on here and I have therefore failed in my quest. I'm simply trying to ascertain how people would like the Great War represented over the next five years and there is no politiking on my part in regard to anything else.

Aside from the few ONTC pieces there are no French figures in horizon blue and Verdun 1916 certainly deserves to be portrayed but not sure how well this would sell.

Gallipoli just isn't going to happen, I'm resigned to this. So my personal choice would be a large Tommy range to commemorate our darkest day but again, I just don't know if this would sell globally.

You need to put your feelers out there.

Regards

Michael

Michael,

You forgot Vimy Ridge which you seemed particularly keen on elsewhere in this forum. If I was K&C I would be hard pressed to know what your preference is based on your various comments.

I am sure you will get plenty to choose from different brands over the period from now to 2018. Some you will like and some you wont. Just dont expect the producers to tell you or this forum their plans years ahead of time.

As he has mentioned in the first post Andy personally meets many collectors (and dealers) in many countries and gets feedback from many sources. At the end of the day people like yourself, Howard, Waynepoo, Doughboy, myself as a dealer etc will all have their individual preferences as to WWI subjects. I am not sure how you could establish a "significant consensus" based on your poll and recent multiple posts on the subject.

Whatever K&C decides to produce the one thing I do know is that it will be what Andy thinks will sell to the most people. How he gets to that decision is probably not going to be that easy. However you can also be sure that there will be those who think he chose the wrong subject(s).

Regards
Brett

Refering to the thread below with the following statement:

Ah, Howard. That's kind of what I am on about. When you speak, Andy does have to listen and looking at your 'Man Lair' (let's face it, it's gone way beyond a simple 'cave') I can quite see why.

To me collectors who have been around awhile with large collections should have their voices heard...................IMO of course :wink2:

Vimy Ridge was and hopefully still will be the preferred choice of JJD, who likes the Canadian angle. That's why I didn't mention it.

Not completely sure if I am being chastised by your post but there's nothing wrong with trying to aide market research is there?

For my fellow WW1 collectors who may not have been downstairs to the book thread, the rather splendid author Max Hastings has a new tome out this coming September entitled ' Catastrophe 1914' ...should be good:smile2:

As for K&C WW1 someone said the other day that Andy had mentioned possibly doing Brit Tommies from 1914 next year. If this is the case then I'm in. So far I've had to resist the excellent releases K&C have produced as I have a glossy Toy Army Workshop collection, but if we are to get the Old Contemptibles I'll be enlisting with the other ' tiddly winking leapfroggers from the great summer of 1914' {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Michael mate,
You and I will have to sit down and debate the pros and cons of Manufacturers "collectors wants" and "releases" at the London Show this coming June. I am sure my good mate Rob will adjudicate as long as we buy him a G&T.^&grin The spoken word is always better than the written as you can see facial expressions and guage emmotions, especially if we are both enjoying a "cold one".^&grin
I look forward to June to meet up for a long chat. I hope you will be at the Show and/or the Dinner.
Cheers Howard

You need to read Louis' book to really know how he feels about Monty.^&grin^&grin A great read.
Is George going to be at the London Show also.??? If that is true then you have made my day.
