1066 Normans 28mm (1 Viewer)

Took about 3 months, painting some every evening. Have doubled the size of my Norman and Saxon armies. Did a little over 700 new figures. Hers some pix of some of them.
All are based and varnished. Put away for now, until I build a battlefield for Hastings. I'll show them off then. 700 troops on each side.
There are 200 Mounted Knights, 160 crossbow men and Archers and 360 heavy foot for the Normans. Saxon, x12 60 figure war bands and a small number of slingers and archers, javelin men numbering perhaps 60.
All are painted with a bewildering variety of shield designs. No decals.I added a number of paper printed flags and banners too. I still have some odd's and end's to finish. Casualties, Some character figures ect. I have a figure of Harold Godswinson falling with an arrow through his eye, SOMEWHERE. Have to find that one.

I glued the figs down to strips of tough cardboard, 3-6 each. Worked on several strips each night , finished them off, and got another 3-4 strips 1/2 done to complete the next night. Over and over again.
Mounted Knights, I have some plastic vice grips that held single figs well at the base. I did 3-6 each night, same thing, over and over.

There are 300 + Saxon foot I did in the same time. I have not taken any pix . Put away until I clear the table and make a suitable Senlac hill to deploy on.
I already had about 700 Normans and Saxons. I doubled it in about 3 months. Did a few Vikings too.

I was on a roll once I got going again. Tip on the shields designs. once you have several coats covering, usually all one color, or halved or quartered in 2 colors, I use AIRBRUSH paint to do the Cross's Dragons, curves, snakes and other assorted GRIPPING BEASTS. Flows smooth as can be. Spiral's , curves ect, all in just a few seconds. I usually draw a bit of a large breath, and hold as I go. Just for a few seconds. Makes for Steady hand. Same with sporting clays, a deep breath and I can bust 3 -4 at a time consistently.

I've got hundreds, perhaps thousands of Wars of the Roses and 100 years war figures to paint. I find researching the Livery, Heraldry to be rather confounding. In particular the War of the Roses. So many Livery's, personalities, switching sides just confusing at least to me.I need to sit down and make a chart as to who's who and their colors before I start. They look so much alike.

I know what you mean. With Wars of the Roses, we are getting towards the end of the use of Heraldry for its primary purpose - which was recognition on the Battlefield. As families progressed, so did the heraldic emblems associated with them - adding designs as people married and had children. Two embelms on a shield or jupon are okay - then four - eight - and so on. Starts to get really tricky working out who's who? I guess they did too - as first shields were dispensed with - and then plate armour progressed and "Coats of Arms" slowly appeared less and less on battlefields - and just used on more ceremonial occasions.

I don't get too hung up about it though - the internet is a fabulous tool - and can usually find the pic I'm after.
