12 Pound Howitzer Advice (1 Viewer)

I'm working on several American Civil War figures by Tradition of London. I have a couple of gun crew figures complete and they look real good. However, I cannot seem to mix the right colors for the howitzer. Here's a picture of the current colors:

As you can see the barrel is to gold (yellow, gray, brown) and the frame might be a little to dark (natural wood, black). I'm using Humbrol Matt Enamels.

What do you guys think?

Artillery of the period is what we might call dark Olive Drab, the metal hardware would be painted black, the rope natural hemp. The paint of the tire tread wore off very fast and would be a dark rust color. The tube should be bronze. Hope this helps.

Mate check out the vallejo range of paints they do all the colours you need including a napoleonic range. They will help greatly with your needs. Also some of the Mig washes even WWII will add realism to your gun especially the washed for allied tanks which, a friend of mine uses who does a lot of tradition builds

I wanted to post a couple of pictures of the completed howitzer. I'd appreciate any feedback you might have as I am still learning the nuances of painting. Thanks for the help with the colors.

I'm not sure wether you have the colours right.... maybe its the image, but I would have used a lighter colour of olive drab.

This is my gun using a Imrie Risley kits (gun & limber) but not sure about the horses.

Your barrel looks good, but I think that they were not a bright as that in real life... my barrel hasn't ben painted, as I've left it as iron metal done by painting some leadlight Patina onto the barrel to gine a weathered look and then sealed with gloss varnish.

It may be shading on the pictures as your photo looks more grey than olive drab

I realize that the Gloss finish can make colors look different. Here is an example of a Matt finished gun that I sculpted for W. Britain.
