I guess I am just thinking out loud, Michael. Perhaps someone else has some idea what thay means. I just find it curious. I know the compilation of guns in any battery was partly a matter of caprice. As we discussed, if you manage to capture a gun from whatever source, you don't leave it behind...afterall, "hey, free gun!"
By the way, I found an interesting reference you might find interesting: "An interesting comparison can be made between the performance of iron and bronze guns under siege conditions where each was expected to fire at least 50 rounds a day. A common failure of the bronze guns was, as Dickson noted, their tendency to overheat and 'droop'. This meant the barrel curved downwards inevitably affectling the accuracy of firing and endangering the crew."(British Napoleonic Artillery 1793-1815, Chris Henry)
