Guys, 70yrs ago today was the 'Hardest day' during the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe hurled everything it had in an attempt to smash the RAF but failed. The raids caused much damage, death and loss of aircraft, however the Germans paid a price that they could no longer afford to pay. The Victory won by the RAF kept this country free and allowed it four years later to be a springboard to Normandy and a free Europe.

I want to just say that every single man and woman of the RAF from all nations who gave their all for us against huge odds have my deepest respect and undying gratitude, I will always be grateful for the wonderful life I have, free from Nazism, hatred, racism and intolerance.

THANK YOU

Rob

Rob...

Not much more to say you have covered it so well. IMO it turned the tide and, showed that the invincible german war machine was able to not only be stopped but, given a beating.

The slippery slope to may 1945 began here

God Bless every last person who suffered through the Blitz. If there is heaven, there must be a special place reserved for the brave young men of the RAF and the other Allied services who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting the Nazis.

Rob mate,
Interesting date the 18th August. In Australia it is Vietnam Veterans Day and was the 44th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
Had I have known it was a date to be remember in the Mother Country I would have had a couple more beers than I did with old mates. Head still sore two days later.
Cheers cobber, Howard

Today is also the 70th Anniversary of Churchill's 'the Few' speech, it will be read out this afternoon outside the Cabinet War rooms in London by actor Robert Hardy who played Churchill many years ago, this will be followed by a fly past of a Spitfire and Hurricane over London, a rare sight these days.

On BBC's Worldwide Service today they had a piece about Churchill and the Speech. They often replay things so I'll see if I can find it and post a link.

Has to be one of the most famous speeches of all time. Does anyone not know it verbatum???

London flypast marks Churchill's 'The Few' speech

"Seventy years ago, Winston Churchill made one of his most stirring speeches.

In his address, given in Parliament, he praised the Battle of Britain aircrews who had fought off the threat of Nazi invasion during the summer of 1940. It become known as "The Few".

An event has been held in Whitehall, central London, to commemorate the speech.

Actor Robert Hardy read extracts from the historic oration, before the world's oldest Spitfire and a Hurricane fighter plane made a fly-past."
