2012 Chicago Show Figure (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Can anyone tell me more info?

Must I be a Collector's Club member?

If yes, must i join the membership first and then make the order 250usd or more to King and Country US website within those dates, and then the figure comes automatically?

Sorry I know it sounds simple but because I am out here in Singapore and trying to figure how to get this figure.

Thks,Chris

Chris,

As far as I can tell you must be a member but you join through the Hong Kong site, kingandcountry.com. Here is the link to join the club, https://www.kingandcountry.com/club.jsp

I think you could do everything at once: join the Club, pay your Club fee of $48, spend the $250 in other product, tell them you want the special Chicago figure and they would ship it to you altogether.

I could be wrong about this but when you join the Club you get a free figure so you may wind up getting the free figure and the Chicago figure as the latter figure would have been tied to your spending $250.

Remember you have to do this between September 15 and 28.

I received the email from Kin Ng at K & C so anyone interested should send him/her an email at kin.ng@kingandcountry.com

It's available to collectors who are not able to attend the show, from K&C for 13 days from today and only if you buy $250 of product from them. I hardly think that this is going to see a huge impact on all the K&C dealers who are not able to offer it. Do K&C HK offer free shipping on orders over $250 like so many of their dealers do? As far as I know they do not and once the offer period has expired, I see more incentive to go to the dealers than to K&C HK. So I can't see why people have got their knickers in a twist over this.

Like Mitch has suggested, I think that it just shows that Andy does pay attention to his market... and acts accordingly. I for one, appreciate that. And I'd like to also thank Brett of the Military Workshop for sending me an email advising that the Chinese Junk will be available in limited numbers and if I ordered from K&C I'd also get the 'show figure'. I appreciate him directing me to K&C HK for a model that I have been chasing for a while and I can guarantee that after I get that Junk, Brett will be the recipient of my next order. What goes around, comes around.

cheers

Good job by Brett :smile2: and hats off to him (and to all dealers).

Mitch,
In your reply to Carlos you said :

"Not sure I get what you mean. This figure and its availability to me, from reading what came in the e-mail has nothing to do with affecting dealers at all".

As a dealer I can tell you you are wrong to think this does not affect the dealers in some, albeit minor, way. OzDigger was correct when he said "Carlos, don't worry there are plenty of members that do get what you mean. In order to receive this complimentary figure buyers will have to purchase a minimum of $250 in product direct from King & Country, that is a $250 minimum per buyer the dealers will not see".

After that post you told OzDigger to calm down and stop nitpicking etc.

This morning OzDigger was in my shop at the same time as one of my good collectors who I knew would like the new figure. I cant be 100% sure but I am pretty sure Oz heard the conversation between myself and the other collector. I told the collector about the figure and said all he had to do was spend $250 with K&C direct (he will consider that a bargain as I know he is willing to pay $250 for CF03 Crossbowman). At the same time I made the comment that I had just lost $250 in sales to this collector by telling him. In this particular case I would rather he get the figure I know he would want. However I doubt I will be telling many others about it{sm4}.

I have no idea how many of my collectors will be interested in the Knight figure. Many are not members of the Club and will not receive the information or even know it existed unless they see it on Ebay. However for each of my customers who do go for the deal it probably represents a loss of sales of $250 to my business. Considering the overall volume of my K&C sales it is going to be insignificant. K&C this year gave my business (my collectors for Brisbane Dinner) 65 free figures which far outweighs any lost sales the Knight deal may cause.

So for the record Carlos and OzDigger were correct in their comment although the impact should be minimal.
Regards
Brett

PS Jules, thanks for your comment. Knew you would want the Junk and double benefit to get the knight figure (what was Andy thinking ^&grin!!!). Incidentally TomNT has just returned from Hong Kong today and hopefully took the photo I requested of the Pirate Galleon I missed on my trip.

Think your spot on Rob great offer from kc {bravo}}

Amazing isn't it, K&C announce a free figure with purchase and it causes arguments on here within hours:rolleyes2: I guess Andy may want to rethink the whole ' buy one Tank get one free' deal, someone will get the hump about it!

Rob

Thats a really nice looking figure and I think its great that K&C are opening its availability up to a wider group of collectors (particularly those into the Crusader series) than just the lucky few able to attend Chicago who may or may not want it anyways! ^&cool

Brett:

I agree with you initially on it only affecting dealers slightly. I love my dealers but at what price? Any market is invisible and ruthless in the constant attempt to find new equilibrium of price vs. value. This Toy Soldier industry is no different; darn it!!!

IMO, Andy is probing to see your reaction and how it might optimize profitability. That’s smart! Remember, if manufacturers aren’t making money they can’t continue to innovate and deliver new releases to you the “Collector”. Okay…Dah!!! Everyone knows that!

Okay, if this initial experiment works, he needs to expand the direct channel strategy and unfortunately eventually cutout the dealers. Since, this industry is basically an “oligopoly” the rest of the manufacturers will be forced to do the same for survival. The only possible exception is maybe Britains. This won’t happen over night because companies will need to completely re-engineer their companies (especially sales & marketing channels) to accomplish this and it requires capital investments but mostly increased working capital.

Some companies may not be able do to this due to lack of capital. Besides during the transition enough of you might object requiring a hybrid (direct, dealer, shows, etc.) sales model instead.

Anecdotal observation – Toy Soldier Market is experiencing stagnation, higher costs, slower inventory turnover and eroding margins meaning everyone is competing for same old client with few exceptions. I HOPE I’M WRONG!

The direct model could actually save the industry from significant contraction given all or most of the companies migrate to this direct model. If they do, it will produce healthy competition, lower prices, more innovation and we the collector win again. This will also attract new collectors and add vitality and sustained health.

However, if KC decides to fully implement this strategy and others don’t or delay then KC reaps the rich rewards and their dominance is solidified. This gives KC healthier margins and the increased cash flow to indirectly eliminate most competitors choosing to stay with old model.

Guys, just an opinion and I’m probably wrong.

Keep in mind that First Legion migrated to a direct sale/Dealer network model like all the others have. They had to have had their reasons. More exposure so collectors could actually see their product. Less capital required as dealers buy in bulk and assume some of the inventory. I'm sure the manufacturers would like to keep the difference between wholesale and retail prices through direct sales, but they don't go only direct. There must be good reasons not to. Your point about capital is one. And I bet the direct sales only model doesn't make the sales volume a dealer model does.

Carlos,
I think you are probably reading too much into what is happening with this one figure. K&C Collector Club figures have been around for several years already so K&C has had plenty of time to *****s that "experiment".

As Terry mentioned FL's sales methods (ie. first three years direct and then changed to allow dealers) suggests perhaps the direct model is not as good as you might think. I certainly dont think adopting the direct sales model attracts more collectors. How would the new collectors find out about such figures ? Shops and their web sites and advertising etc are responsable for creating more new collectors than the actual manaufacturers can do themselves by one web page, advertising and a base in one country.

So on this one we where we will have to have a different opinion.

Brett,

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I am probably reading too much into it.

Thanks Brad for helping me. I have just applied and paid for 2 years membership, for two figures. I still did not get any acknowledgement yet. Perhaps their online payment system is not really online. After that, I will settle the US250 order.

Also, to spend US250 for stuff that you want from their recent releases is not too difficult... The RA, BBG and BBA had been like staple food and pent up demand.

I had been avoiding joining the Club because I do support the retail side strongly. With figures, it is nice to physically see what you are getting. Also, we try to make friends wherever we make our purchases at retailers.

I can understand some of the fuss. Issues like this is very real when you are in Asia and retail rentals are very high. That loss of US250 per customer does go a long way. But, fortunately, there are not too many Crusader collectors out here in Asia. For me, being Christian Catholic, I see it as a part of my heritage, and I will collect both the Crusader and Saracens, Life of Jesus.

As an example of the book industry, I will hate to see the online book killing the bookshops. I would hate to ever see Barnes and Noble go because I enjoy browsing their Stackpole books to find out which ones I want before I part with my money. When you order online, this is one thing that is hugely impossible.

With, King n Country, they are becoming like an Intel ( in my trade ). If 90% of the time, their stuff is on the dot, it will start to diminish the value of those in the middle. This has always been the case for retailers if you are pushing a well known brand. What we need is a balance. If retailers do not make money because of rentals, shipping, etc, and we get less and less of such toy soldier shops, it will not be good either. I came into King n Country primarily because of Time Machine and especially because of Soldier Story in Singapore. Without them, I think we will hardly have got started.... Thanks all for reading and please enjoy your great Sunday!

Thks,Chris
