Hi all, been doing some research with my brothers about our 3 X Great Grandfather and his time served with the 55th of Virginia Sharpshooters of Essex County, as he fought under R.E. Lee and the Confederate Army....to say I'm lucky to be alive is a understatement!! George Samuel saw action in many of the more famous battles and was even promoted after the battle of Chancellorsville, later he arrived with Brockenbrough's brigade at Gettysburg, which saw sceessful action July 1st at McPherson ridge, the unit rested in the woods on the 2nd, on the 3rd the unit was part of the disaster of Pickett's charge...the unit was on the far left flank and was quickly scattered in retreat as they came under heavy Union cannon and Musket fire.....as for George, he was captured on July 7th at Cashtown in Gettysburg and sent to Fort Delaware prison until the end of the War...returning back to his beloved Virginia home and land to raise family, crops until his passing....I'm hoping in a after life there is a meeting as I have many questions I'd like to ask him!!

Thanks Chris, I would love to hear about your Great Grandfather in France, I'm sure there is plenty history to find out, hope you will post if you find any information.

Actually after a terrible June, Arizona is having one of the most wettest Seasons on record..feels like I'm in Virginia more then AZ with the humidity and rain!!!🤣

Hi Chris,
My grandfather was born in Germany and fought in WW1 as a high ranking officer. Fortunately he fought on the Eastern Front so your great grandfather wouldn't have fought against him in France.
I don't think he actually saw any action but was in charge of some occupied villages where he later met my Russian grandmother and brought her back to Germany. They left Germany in 1925 with
my five year old father to be and settled in New York. My grandfather was a renowned fencing champion and he taught my father who also became an accomplished fencer. My dad tried to teach me
but I didn't think it was cool and preferred the more traditional football, baseball and lacrosse.
