3D Printer question (1 Viewer)

From what I understand, yes. I've seen different result from different printers, from poor to excellent. I guess you get what you pay for. The more expensive printers net better results. 3-D printers insert an interesting dimension into this hobby. Want a 1/72 pose reproduced in 1/32-no problem. I'd like to see a software version that allows you to scan a photo, and print the object, but from what I understand, this is a few years out.

My son is a graphic artist and utilizes his company's 3-D printer. Per my conversation with him, before programming the printer, you need to create a 3-D image via CAD or 3-D graphic software. The quality of the output will depend on the accuracy and details you enter into the program (down to the bolts and nuts of the model you want to recreate). Front, back, top. bottom view from actual photographs are taken (preferably HD for sharpness). An isometric view is then re-created by the computer, The printer will then capture the image an print it in a media you prefer (plastic, metal, resin etc.). High grade printers are currently used in medical applications (re-creating organs from tissues (media) harvested from the patient. Other companies such as Boeing are using 3-D printers to create prototypes of planes (scaled models). We are 3-4 years down the road before we can have a home based application (but you still have to create a 3-D image on your computer).

If I am correct, you can get a good 3-D scanner and use it to do a 360 all arround scan of an object (Like a 1/72 figure) and load it into your computer program to feed it to the 3-D printer to print it into whatever scale figure you want. Can't wait for these to get cost effective and make detailed enough objects to have one.

I'm thinking that if someone has 1/6 scale figures like G.I. Joe, Dragon, 21st Century, SOTW, ect. they could take them, uniform and equipt them how they want, then pose them how they want and scan with a 3-D scanner. Then feed the scan to a 3-D printer, and print out a figure in any pose they want in any scale they want. That would be cool. What do you guys think?

Impressive detail! I don't think I've ever seen better . . .

It would be interesting to see a photograph of an actual figure. Everything on that site is a render digital image, not an actual physical product as far as I could see.

3D printing is used a lot of vehicles but still really isn't there in terms of quality or cost for figures...

That's is actually a bit the catch
Lot of producers who are working with 3D software are using pictures of software rendering

1 sculpting classic big size , scanning, enhancing with software, printing, correcting and making separate parts for a master mold
2 scanning real person etc ....
or
3 direct development with software and ... ( see above )
4 or printing for production
5 any mix of the above
Almost nobody is clear about what they do
They are also makers who even don't give the size on their webb, or don't give the material used, or don' say ( base not included, or the small diorama add on )
Please Mr producers, your are artist OK, we like you OK, we like what you do OK :smile2:
But when you sell, you are commercial . So act accordingly with full infos
- size
- painted or not
- assembled or not
- made in .. resin, white metal .. other ( like : etched parts ... )
- number of parts in the kit
- ground base included or not
- small dio add-on ( as on the box art ) included or not
- picture form actual molded piece or 3D software rendering ( sculpted by ... painted by .... )
- packing : box, blister, plastic pack ....
- and ... price ... (some are forgeting )

Thank you so much
You are today almost 1500 manufacturers on the market .
