I bought this recently, obviously a solid re-cast, but does anyone know who made the original? I am thinking of repainting the Gas mask Haversack, plus the helmet.

and probably isn't a recast.

Hi, Mike, he noted that it's a solid figure, so it would have to be a recast, if not of a known Britains figure, then of one of the other hollowcast makers' figures, wouldn't it? My first thought was Johillco, but looking in O'Brien's books, I don't find any photos of this specific figure. He does bear a similarity, though, to one of the standing British infantry figures in the Hill catalog. While checking on Johillco, I'm reminded that there was a gentleman from New York, Ken Wittenrich, who sold solid recasts of Johillco and other figures, back in the 90s. I don't know if he's still in business today.

I didn't see anything like this in the chapters on Crescent, Benbros, or Taylor & Barrett, either, though that doesn't rule them out, necessarily. Still looking...

Prost!

Thanks for the help Gents. I agree with Mike about someone being ticketed, probably for showing a light, but the helmet is blue. This is the same as the gas-mask haversack, which is a military issue, but civilians normally wear them over one shoulder, not on the chest. The clothing looks military, and the jacket has epaulettes, but is a tunic style, buttoned up to the neck. I appreciate the help Brad, but if it isn't possible to identify the maker, I will probably repaint as a WW2 Police figure, (white helmet, black & white striped duty armlet) and ignore the gas mask issue.
Obviously I would love to repaint as the original would be, but we can't have everything we want. When I bought it, I assumed it was an ARP Warden, but the jacket sort of rules that out. I know the likes of JoHillCo are never 100% accurate of course. I am adding another pic taken in natural light so you can see the colours better:-

Mike you have done brilliant! I suppose we will never know exactly what colours were used, but I will be doing something fairly accurate. I may even get some RTV & make a few more, all in different guises of course. Thanks again. :salute::

Oh this gets better, thanks Mike. I have never actually used RTV, but yes I have made plaster moulds, with a fair bit of success too! You have given me plenty to search for, and I am sure I will find the maker, colour scheme too with any luck. I like the Firemen figures, wish I could find some of those. Thanks again Mike.

Just for interest, I have had these for a while now, and always assumed they were home made (Prince August) I am now thinking they may be by Gerry Ford:-

He may use Prins August figures as mannikins for the basis of conversions. The bases do look a little like the base castings from PA molds. They're nice figures, in any case.

I recall now a series of figures that have been featured either in Toy Soldier & Model Figure or Toy Soldier Collector, designed to tell the story of a young British man drafted and serving in WWII. Is that series his? I'll have to look it up tonight and refresh my memory.

Prost!
Brad
