The 54th New York Schwarzer Jaegers in action.

The Schwarzer Jaegers, consisted exclusively of Germans, many of whom had seen service in Germany, or, had already served three months under President Lincoln's first call for volunteers, was recruited by Col. Eugene E. Kozlay, during the summer of 1861, in New York City, as the " Black Rifles." They were uniformed in black and silver like the regiment after which they were named, " Lutzow's Schwarzer Jaegers."

The regiment received its numerical designation of Fifty-fourth New York Volunteers on October 15, 1861, and on December 1, 1861 it was assigned to Steinwehr's Brigade, Blenker's Division, all composed of Germans, at Hunter's Chapel, Va.

The 54th saw numerous action during the Civil War, including Gettysburg.

Superb set of glossies Brad.

Only wish some manufacturer would produce a matte set of the these distinctive "Black Hunters" as I would be first in the queue. If I remember correctly their original regimental colours was a black flag with a silver skull and crossbones.

Thanks again for the comments, particularly from Bob and Wolfgang. Trophy also made a Garibaldi set. I will try to get some photos of that and look into the unit history.

Wolfgang, sorry to ruin your project {eek3}. I will try to get a better closeup of the soldiers and post a photo either today or tomorrow.

Brad

Here's a recent acquisition, a Schwarze Jaeger Flagbearer.

Just discovered this. Great figures and photos!

Happy Fourth of July!

Greetings, do you have any more information in the 54th's uniform? Did the black uniform have a frock coat piped silver? What color were the NCO's chevrons? We're their trousers (were they also black?) piped silver or did they have a silver/gray stripe?

Dan
