A Gordon for Me (1 Viewer)

Did you say "without a net" Brit, old bean? {eek3}Why, I have scorned the use of a net - since I saw that geezer in Spartacus come to grief in the ring;)! I think it was Tony Curtis that decided me to go for it - sans net! Mind you - I had a lot more hair then!

The only net I use today - is of the Inter - variety! jb^&grin

That is to funny, if we ever meet up the Brains are one me !!

Looking forward to seeing these all finished and shiny marching along in formation....what a sight it will be......telephoto lens I think !! :D:D

I think I have a smidgen of an idea what is on order from Yeomanry

No-one's looking forward to finishing these more than me! As to the Brains are on you - well - it won't be far from my old home town then - we've managed to keep " the devils brew" secret for a long time now - and it doesn't travel that far from home!

As to the next project - well - I guess you're not too far from where the project would have originated - so not surprised you may have guessed.

I hope the current project WILL be quite a sight when I finally put the brushes down. I must admit to being quietly very pleased with them all so far - so hope it doesn't just fizzle out at the end. I'm trying very hard NOT to rush it though - as I don't want to spoil all of the work - and time - I've put in so far.

I must say though - after a somewhat shaky start - I have very much enjoyed rising to the challenge you offered to do a "step by step" with the project. It has certainly made me think a lot harder about what I am doing - and sort of demanded a bit more of a disciplined approach from me - than I otherwise might have done. So thanks for the opportunity - I might just try it again.

Regards chum(s) - johnnybach

I'll leave you now with Sergeant Strapp ( better known to his troop as Jock) who has re-joined Whisky Troop (well - what else) for a night march under gas-light, of course. In the lead is their Officer - Mister Turning - who always seems to get 'em lost.

Hmmm. I knew one of those - once upon a time...............Nite all. johnnybach

I painted the bases of the two pipers and a side-drummer last night - then varnished them this morning - so can add them to the nucleues of the Drum and Pipe Band for the regiment.

This now shows the answer to the question posed by Scott (Britfarmer) the other day...."What's left?"

PIC193.jpg

The band will have eight pipers - a base drummer and nine side drummers ( six full size, and three half size"cheese" drummers). So - what's left are six pipers, four fll size side-drume, two cheese drums and a base drum - all of which are under-way - some very close to finished.

This is the "hard bit" for me - as all of the problems have now gone - and it's just the finishing straight of painting left to go - ho-hum! Just get on with them now. johnnybach

Well just get on with it then! :rolleyes2::tongue:^&grin

Johhny, you have proved yourself a real trooper taking on this number of figures for a painting project, well done mate. :smile2:

Jeff

I don't know about you Jeff - but this is the part that I find the most tedious. You know you just have to do it to finish - but your head is already trying to solve the problems associated with the next project. A bit like - "been there - got the T shirt" sort of thing.

I don't know if your familiar with the "Starter - Finisher" personality types? Well, I am definitely a starter - and not a finisher - as La Commandante will confirm!

I will get there - but love diversions.......... Sorry 'bout that.

Maybe 68 was pushing the envelope a tad! Still doing a bit more on them this morning. On! - On! jb

Here are the "Dirty Bakers Dozen" - the 13 figures That I have left to finish painting for this project to be completed. Many are well under way and some almost finished. As they are now getting quite "bitty" - I will probably post them on a dwindling basis from here in - until the magical day when there are none left to paint.

Then I will have a massive playtime and photo-shoot of them all - at last.^&grin johnnybach

Just when you think that everything is plain sailing from here on in - up pops a little unforseen problem.

The base drummer (for the Drum and Pipe band - remember) has now had his weight-watchers, slimmed down drum attached to his body - and arms went on - to find - oops - no wings were cast in to the base drummers arms.

No problemo - I have had loads of practice manufacturing these - when the Military band was being formed. Another two "nail clippings" were fabricated from a pill blister pack - and were stuck on to the shoulders ( which I left bare of paint to make sure my super-glue fixing stays put!).

A swipe of filler under each wing - and into the peg-hole where the arm fits when all is dry - and the wings/arm-tops will be ready for painting. Note that this figure is all-but completed - only the pre-painted drum and arms to go (and the base - which is always last - of course). Should be another in the "finished" category, later today. jb

I have been working on these five figures today - in short bursts. There is nothing major left to do - just lots of small and fiddly detail, so care must be taken when handling that no wet paint is smudged. The Bass Drummer is nearly there now - just needs to dry thoroughly overnight - then a last check-over to check each detail - wand will probably get first coat of varnish later on tomorrow - along with the others shown here. If all goes as planned - then that's 60 finished - with just 8 to go. Getting closer now.................jb:D

Getting there Jhonny
I'm still following
Anxious to see them all together
Maple Leaf

O faithful friend - I never doubted you for a moment - but hey - you wouldn't want me to rush them and spoil all of the hard work - would you?

When this five are done - I will take a pic with those others from this band who are finished - and then also show what I have left. That way you can join in the countdown. We are currently into single figures for those - and they are ALL underway - so won't be long now.

So keeeeeeeep watching! ^&grin johnnybach

Seriously - thanks for the encouragement - I have needed a bit - on occasions.

As the time for a big parade in front of the Monarch (Queen Victoria) draws ever closer, Colonel Lockhart is getting concerned at the lack of Pipers and drummers in his band. He is aware that several pipers are still to join the band - and though satisfied with their music - has ordered those members of the band who have recently graduated from the School of Pipe Music in Edinburgh - to get some time in on the square - under the direction of Sergent Major Mapleleaf ( a Tartar!!), seen here at rear centre of the group - giving the lads "a bit of stick". Lochart himself, is following the group closely - just to be sure!

They are looking smart - and sounding good - though missing four of the pipers - yet to graduate - and some more drummers - some currently awaiting new uniforms to be finished, and some serving out some time in sick-bay - due to Haggis Poisoning (some dastardly devil spiked their haggis recently - and the lads are still recuperating!). - so are not present on this occasion.

Will the lads recover in time?

Will the Q.M and Tailor EVER finish their new uniforms in time for the parade.

Will Johnnybach (never trust a Sassenach) ever finish...........

Tune in tomorrow - for another gripping installment of "The Gordons - an Epic Saga of Lead and Paint"

(Note - another pic in 30 mins showing development of the final 10! - paint drying!!)

Pic197.jpg

Meanwhile - back in Edinburgh School of Music - the Tenuous Ten ( they dragged the drummers out of sick-beds) are trying out their first attempt at playing and marching - some of them with uniforms quite unfinished!!!

How do they sound????

Awful!!

Will they ever pick up the step?

Will Lockhart ever get his long awaited MBE?

Will Sgt. Major Mapleleaf ever get a grip of them??

Only Jock O'johnnybach is sure.............

Of course they will! - just have a bit of patience...............

Now where's that new brush - this ones only got a few hairs left.............. jb

PIc198.jpg

Johnny,

One can't rush the fiddly bits! But very well worth it in the end. :wink2:

Looking forward to seeing them all together.

Jeff

Yes - I know that you will know. These drummers have so many of the fiddly bits though. I much prefer it when the drums are separate too. When they are cast in - you are forever trying to get at stuff that's half hidden. Heigh ho - my own fault - I should have left some easier stuff to do at the end.

Got quite a lot done today though - so shouldn't be too long now. jb

And then there were seven! Just seven left to complete the project - and all are not far off! HURRAH!! And here they are:

PIC199.jpg

And now there are six pipers on parade - still getting some stick from the Sarn't Major and poor old Colonel Lockhart! ( a worried toy!). Another side-drummer has joined in today too - as his uniform has finally been finished. The Colonel's good lady has been stitching away all night to get it right. Those darned buttons.{eek3}

So - two pipers yet to graduate from the School of piping - but the news is good - and we have high hopes for a full complement of pipers on parade tomorrow - side drummers almost there too. Just a few more days - and we will be there.^&grin

I'm knackered - but can't go sick - Lockhart and the Sarn't Major would kill me! johnnybach

Can't wait for the parade
Getting closer and closer
Still following Johnny
Maple Leaf

They are drilling night and day Mapleleaf. One thing is for sure - they will all be in step "on the day", You may note that my Sergeant Major (RSM-in today's terms). may sound familiar?

Pretty confident that I may finish off a couple more today. Won't be too long now, I have reached agreement with "La Commandante" - to turn her sewing table into a parade ground! (temporary). johnnybach

Hi,
Sorry I have not posted on your thread yet, but I have been reading it all along{sm4}^&cool. They are all wonderfull, and I can't wait to see the final product! Also, what did the figures start out as? Where did you get them? I seem to have missed this information:rolleyes2:.
As of right now, my mother's sewing table is my painting sation ^&grin:wink2:. She tells me it's either no new reenacting cloths, or move the soldiers{sm4}.
