Bronco Models just announced that they will produce an Airspeed Horsa glider in 1/35th scale! A tad small for many toy soldier scales, but it could be in the background or suspended as if about to land, and so on...

I'm sure it'll fit in fine with all classic 1:32 except TSSD and its scaled cronies.

Hi Guys,

With respect, one only has to do the math to realise just how small 1/35 scale really is. Anything in 1/35 won't fit in with 1/32, let alone 1/30.

A real Airspeed Horsa has a wingspan of about 25.08 Meters (approx 82 feet 4 inches)

In 1/35 scale a model Horsa would have a wingspan of 71.65 centimeters (approx 2 feet 4 inches)

In 1/30 scale a model Horsa would have a wingspan of 83.6 centimetres (approx 2 feet 9 inches)

A 1/30 scale model would therefore be 16.67% larger (in every direction!) than a 1/35 scale model. I wouldn't call that compatible.

If you really do need a 1/30 scale Horsa, have you thought about a "card model"?

The well known, and well respected Polish Card Model company: "GPM" make a very well detailed model of a Horsa in 1/33 scale, which is just that much closer to 1/30. [by well detailed I mean opening doors and ramps, full interior including the cockpit, adjustable flaps etc]

The great saving grace with card models is the adjustable Photo Copier Machine. Take your book of prints along to your local photocopy guru and ask him to "blow it up by 19.99%" Hey presto: you will have a 1/30 scale model.

Disclaimer: Of course it is not quite that easy. GPM prints onto A3 paper, which is the biggest card stock which will go through the average Photo-copier, and they print stuff right out to the outer margins. So one has to "cull" the stuff on the original, and reprint before blowing up. But, it can be, and has been done by many of us with very gratifying results.

The other saving grace of Card Models is the price. If one googles : "GPM Kartonowe" up will come stockists from all over the world. Or, one can go straight to the GPM website: www.gpm.pl The Horsa is catalog Number 249 Series J. Ever with the extra photocopy cost one will have lots of money left over to buy more figures! Card models are remarkably durable. After assembly, paint out any "cut lines" with your favourite modelling paint and then spray the whole model with a couple of well spaced applications of clear varnish.

Happy Modelling,

Bob

I "CHEAT" a lot with 1:35 for my 1:32 collection.
Even amongst our 1:32 soldiers there is AIRFIX & TSSD scale.
So the real question I ask myself is: HORSA or NO HORSA?
I say HORSA!

I'm with PG on this one, though it varies - some 1/35th vehicles are OK with 1/32nd figures but I don't think 1/35th figures work with 1/32nd figures or vehicles... 1/30th and 1/32nd are fine together - we do it all the time and no one comments on it because in the heat of a game no on notices.

I do have a hankering to try a paper model though - the photos look really good. So thanks for that idea and the name to look for, Oberstinhabe.
