A latest find... (1 Viewer)

I didn't have much experience with the Welsh side of the Forces, but I understand the name convention easily (being a repatriated expatriate Yank; confusing, isn't it!) now that the wording is explained. I must admit I find many US usages, especially the modern ones, are actually much harder for me to grasp. I'm afraid I've fallen behind a bit during my absence. :)

Perhaps I'll never catch up, not that I'm trying very hard.

Anyway, I think it would be great fun to paint one up. I've gotten much pleasure from fixing up and repainting knocked-about figures found at "junque-shoppes", and have spent many years as a railway and aircraft modeller. The gear is all here and I find painting very relaxing.

My sincere thanks again for pointing the way to available castings. I had no idea...

Oh, my. It's a whole new world now...

Meanwhile, I happened on the thread in General Glossies regarding "Castings I Have Painted".

I do believe I'm in deep trouble...

:D

I'm resurrecting this thread only to post another "find in a dusty place", which of course begs a question or two from the knowledgeable here.

This is a Corgi piece, apparently done for HM's Silver Jubilee back in 1977. First a photo or two, then the questions:

This is made very much in the flavour of the plastic Britains Deetail series, so I'm curious whether Corgi and Britains were associated at the time. For a combined plastic and metal coach (as opposed to the completely metal ones offered both before and after), the form and decoration is really quite nice overall

Any wisdom?

Regards to all,
Brian

I actually answered my own question; it would appear not. These were offered from 1977-1983 and apparently considered a vehicle in the toy vehicle market, neither in concert nor in competition with Britains "Deetail".

It does make for an interesting comparison, especially as it only bled me for $12 (or about eight quid).

That isa nice piece sarge. Yes Britains and Corgi were never together, although Corgi is now part of Hornby.

Corgi relabeled this set for Charles & Diana's wedding and then remade it for the Queens Golden Jubilee and the Queen Mother's 100th birthday.

One then wonders if they might do another for the Diamond Jubilee...

Getting back to Britains, one also has to wonder if some sets might be in the offing from them as well. A lovely Guards band set perchance?

Well, one can dream...

You never know sarge Corgi may just bring it out one more time :) I think Britains offering is the coronation coach which quite frankly is a bit of a disappointment :( More of a tourist item I think than a toy soldier collectible.

I would wait and see.... who knows- there might be a large ceremonial series soon....! As for the coach, I think it was a great idea, as I think it was intended only as a souvenir.

If memory serves, the Britains coronation coach is a tiny thing, too; not to scale with our soldiers. For that reason, it really doesn't seem all that useful for me. I would guess you're right; it's intended to sell at the Palace gift shop.

At least the Corgi landau is of the same nominal scale as the rest of my collection, so it does display well.

Yes you are correct sarge, it is smaller than the standard toy soldiers and not intended to be displayed with them.

If you get a chance can you snap a shot of the carriage with some Britains figures as I thought the scale of the Corgi set was about 1:43 and would be too small.

It certainly isn't 1/43 (a scale I'm used to in my railway pursuits).

I'll even do one better and compare with the Britians landau.

There really is no more of a scale variance between the two than found within Britains glossy range itself. The Corgi has a somewhat narrower track and coachbody, otherwise quite comparable for size and proportion.

The overall effect of the Corgi is not bad at all, given it is made mostly of plastics a la Deetail, so it would certainly do well as a part of a display or parade for the more budget constrained or the fellow still searching out the perfect Britains landau without embarrassment.

Thanks looks really good with the Britains. I may to pick one of these up now.
