As long as I've been model-making and painting I've never had a desk/table/bench specifically created with the hobby in mind. I've used a computer desk, night stand, dining room table and kitchen bar in my pursuits, and I've had two problems - aches and pains from poor posture and having to pack everything up when company comes or kids are about. I recently moved into a new house and now have a little space of my own, so I wanted to do things right and get a good work area set up that fulfills my needs and won't send me off to the chiropractor. Has anyone bought or built something ideal?

I've shown this before, but it's always fun to show my area:

Left side of the bench:

and looking over to the right:

That bench, I built when I lived in a mobile home, saving up to buy a house. It took up a whole room, in the trailer, though the room was little more than a closet with a window.

This is the view behind the camera in these shots, showing my stash:

plus some other model kits in a spare room upstairs:

As you can see, I'm a packrat :D

Prost!

Ummm! - No! - johnnybach

So - this space was unplanned - but just seemed to grow on its own. It once was a spare bedroom - but is now............"Home"

It is really two large desks pushed into a corner. One knee hole is for the computer - the other is where I paint.

You ought to see it when it isn't tidy! johnnybach

Good thread. I have the same problems as yourself without a permanent work table.

If I don't get posture and lighting correct, it affects the quality of my work and the length of time I can do any one task.

I have my old wooden drafting table (we coun't have wood in the new office enviroment) set up in the workshop/studio in th back yard.

John,

Congratulations for this program and your collection !
This is really the kind a publicity that can bring new people to the hobby.

Kind regards,

Michel

Very nice area :) Looks to be a great collection indeed. I also like the Andy McNab novels, good stuff.

Currently reading "Seven Troop". Andy McNabb never fails to take my mind back to some of the characters that I knew a while ago. I think that's why I like his stuff so much. "La Commandante" reckons all I need is a kettle in there (for a brew) and she would hardly ever see me. I don't think it's true though - I would need a microwave oven for that.

Now I wonder where it could go....Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....... jb

LOL.....weeks on end never having to leave.....nice :)

McNab surely is a multi talented man. {sm0}

I paint in a recliner (reclined) sometimes because it's easier on the back though not really stable enough for good 28mm eyes so that's not the only place I paint. There's really no way to have good posture sitting at a normal desk, but I've heard jewelers and watch makers/repairers use a higher than normal desk so they don't have to bend over so much.

Do what I did, as soon as your kid graduates, throw them out and take a room for yourself!^&grin
No muss, no fuss, wifey just insists I keep it looking like a room not a tool shed, which I also have and it's... well ..typical.

Looks like a great area to wind down in! I am a ways off from the kids leaving so I will have to make due elsewhere until they do :)

Nice shots....I like your room layout.

Thanks, Raymond:)

Thanks for all the feedback and pics! My wife, who performs ergonomic studies as part of her job, is going to take all the factors into consideration and work up an ideal workstation on paper. I may have to build it from scratch, but I think I can modify a drafting table (good call on the higher desk, Wendy!).
