My American, Australian, South African, and other non Brit friends will probably never heard of this guy. Jimmy Saville was a pioneering DJ in the sixties, had a hugely popular tv show in 70's/80's in the UK called ' Jim'll fix it' in which he made children's dreams come true , he was loved by many not only for his show but for the fact he raised millions for Stoke Mandeville hospital by among other means running marathons. He also gave up a lot of spare time to work for free as a porter at the Hospital. He was quite an eccentric looking character almost always wearing track suits, heavy jewellery and clutching a huge cigar he was one of the biggest celebs the BBC had on its books. He passed away last year. And then this story broke about five days ago, over the last few days the shock waves from this story have just got bigger and bigger as more and more people come forward, other celebs are now speaking up about what they heard and the culture of the BBC at the time .The BBC has announced it will be holding its own inquiry as to what if anything went on once the Police investigation is finished. The contry appears to be in real shock over this over the last few days. Memorial plaques vandalized and last night his gravestone was removed by his relatives. Extraordinary story and subsequent effect on the news;

Rob...

These stories have been around for a number of years along with his temper issues that were always allegedly supressed by the people around him and, within the TV companies

there was rumours of stuff when he was heavily into the fix it programme but, his charity work etc always made people think it could not be true throughout his life

It will be interesting to see what comes of this over the coming months

Possibly, should have been arrested years ago for crimes against fashion!!

Well, we're going through the same thing here with Jerry Sandusky, who was an assistant football coach at Penn State University. He was a great figure in college football, and off the field, he was noted for his charity, the Second Mile, which helped disadvantaged kids from the inner city. Turns out he was a serial homosexual pedophile, who used his access through his charity and through the university to select and attack his victims. And when word first got to his boss, legendary coach Joe Paterno, and to the university, they sat on the story. It's been a huge scandal, it brought about Paterno's dismissal (though the administration had been looking to get rid of him for some time), the fall of PSU's president (who is a rather despicable moral relativist, in any case), NCAA sanctions on the school, and worst of all, scarred Sandusky's victims for the rest of his lives.

It's a fallen world.

Sandusky, at his sentencing, arrogant to the last, is still proclaiming he did nothing wrong, even in the face of his victims. His sentence wasn't severe enough. It may end up he will die in prison, but that is too good for him. What a tragedy for all the lives he's effectively ruined that he is still denying everything he is guilty of. What must his family feel, more so his victims?:mad: -- Al

I have several buddies who are "Corrections Professionals" {sm3}. They said when Sandusky first entered Centre County Prison the inmates were all lined up singing Pink Floyd's The Wall, in particular "Hey Teacher, leave them kids alone!!". I assure you, prison has its own sense of justice and this guy will be given absolutely no quarter. And rightly so.

Make no mistake about it, this has even become a major issue at my house, my wife is still True Blue but Ive long since burned or otherwise disposed of all and anything PSU related. She's pretty miffed at me but hey, it is what it is. My oldest will be going to college in 2 years, I told him he takes PSU, he's paying on his own, not one cent of my money is going back to that place ever!!

Admittedly, this story Rob posted sounds even worse- 120+ kids!! Good Grief!!

When I first read the story that Rob linked I thought of Sandusky.

The one thing that I did wonder about is whether there is any definite proof against Jimmy Saville (who I do think I may heard about as I lived in Spain in the late 60s and we were all in touch with anything to do with English music).

As far as attending Penn State, each to his own, but PSU is a great educational institution and admittedly administration was asleep at the wheel but they're gone and we're talking only about the football program. Why punish anybody else. The academic departments had nothing to do with this. If your daughter went there I'm sure she'd get a first rate education.

Spanier set the tone for the administration, as president of the university, and I've heard quotes from him from the past, as well as his comments since this broke. he's a moral relativist and a moral coward. Someone with more fortitude and a clearer sense of right and wrong might have been better at encouraging an environment where this kind of problem would have been dealt with quickly and severely from the start.

Very true. Someone facing the start of a prison sentence can be expected to maintain his innocence, but I heard it put this way this morning--he could have expressed regret for the lives of his victims in his statement, without admitting guilt. Instead, it's everyone else's fault but his own.

Brad (Jazzeum type)- You should know by now that I take things to the extremes {sm4}{sm4}

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the tip of the iceberg and Savile wasn't the only one involved. :mad:

Rob...

I think as this will be a big story that everyone from top down will want a say and, we will have hundreds of people having their accusations printed soon.

It will be for the investigators to sort out what is factual and what is not. Pretty sure its a good job that he is dead but, its strange to think the majority of these people were prepared to keep silent until his death??

There were several allegations years ago but, nothing came so, many people will now be extremaly worried where this axe will fall from politicians to police and everyone in between. Lots of heads will roll with this of that I am quite sure
Mitch

I don't know who's sicker,him or the people that protected him.
Mark

He looked like he was strange and acted like he was. Reminds me of a sicko in Australia called Dennis Furgerson. Two grubs together . I have no time for these people. Simmo.

Yep, never heard of him before Rob but looks like eveyone knows about him here now, here is one of those reasons why capital punishment is still needed.
Wayne.

Anyone else see the Panorama programme last night entitled ' Jimmy Saville, what the BBC knew'? My god it was pretty jaw dropping, both in alleged crimes and who knew what at the BBC, director general is just appearing in front of a house of commons select commitee, he is sure about to earn his wages!!{eek3}

severance pay more likely the axe is sharpening and the many heads that will roll will begin quite soon in many organisations because of this affair. It really does look that eyes were either negligently shut or, more sinisterly with compliance to some of the actions being made public not only from the BBC but, other organisations like the hospitals and agencies that seem to have just thought rubbish its that do-gooder Jimmy saville.

I hope he falls on his own sword not only for this recent scandal but, for the many that have went through the BBC in recent years. He should even go for allowing strictly come dancing.

This inquiry just gets bigger and bigger. With alleged possible victims of Saville now numbered in their hundreds, pop star Gary Glitter being investigated, today Freddie Starr was arrested and taken in for questioning. For my US and other nations friends Freddie Starr was a ' comedian' (of sorts) in the 70's and 80's and another big household name in the UK. I've no idea if he is guilty or innocent but I could never stand his act even as a kid. It was a poor act that often included him dressed as a Nazi/Hitler character doing a type of farcical routine involving him falling over quite often. Even for those days it was weak and often remember various family members saying ' oh turn it over, can't stand this man!' Funny how things stick in your mind from decades ago isn't it, but ask me what I went into the supermarket for today and I've forgotten!^&grin

With Police stating they expect to make more arrests in the coming days people are wondering just who is next and how much damage is this doing to the BBC, this scandal not only refuses to go away but appears to grow on a daily basis.
