Now and then, these Russian castings turn up a really delightful piece. This figure represents a personage who helped Peter the Great build up the Russian fleet.

Hi Victor,

I painted this figure for a local collector earlier this year, he wanted it in gloss finish, but I much preferred matte ....

Hi John,

An excellent piece! I love well-painted gloss figures too. Many of these figures are really quite suitable for either matt or gloss finish.

Hi All,

Had a painting moment and completed Lefort to this stage.

While waiting for the paint to dry out and before the final details, I epoxied the figure to the base.

Hi Victor

Looking good! I know you are using oils but the figure does look as if it could be a real portrait. If you put him against a dark background with a gold frame I think you could fool a few people into thinking that it was. Looking forward to the final details. How many hours work have you taken on him?
Best regards
M

Hi Malcolm,

Saw your Optivisor thread. No wonder I am getting such nice compliments from you...:):):)

Surprisingly, painting this figure was not that difficult. After the initial painter's block (no inspiration etc), that took months, once I got cracking, it took about a couple of days, probably about 10 hours so far, I think.

I tend to work on several projects at any one time, so always have some half-way done or abandoned until the next time.

While waiting for the piece to dry out (oils take time...), I stained the base and varnished it. Added some groundwork and sprinkled some grass.

And guess what? I added a fence prop as well... :) Well, he was instrumental in helping Peter the Great build up St Petersburg from the ground up.

I am still doing minor touchups on this piece but I decided to take final pics against a black bkgd now since I was doing the same for the other finished figures.
