African Wars (1 Viewer)

This is perhaps the most accurate contemporary depiction of a NCO during the campaign (although the individual's facial features have been based on Bob Hoskins!)

There is great attention-to-detail. The late artist, Richard Scollins, sought the advice of Ian Knight before producing this for James Bancroft's book on Rorke's Drift. The Army only gave them one uniform re-issue per year and during the Anglo Zulu War, it had been nine months since the last one.

The four panel helmet is also correct in this case of the 24th. There were six panel hats worn in the campaign too but in terms of the 1/24th the four panel foreign service helmet is accurate.

Not to mention I've even seen debate on whether or not the 1st BN 24th Foot was even issued the P-1871 equipment by the time of Isandlwana... not to mention photos of the 2nd BN 24th Foot frequently wearing dyed helmet covers as opposed to dyeing the helmet itself.

One can only wonder how strictly uniform regulations would have been enforced in the field.

The 80th don't seem to get much of a look in when it comes to the AZW. Ntombe isn't really one of the "sexy" engagements of the campaign and perhaps as a consequence of the very speed with which the abaQulusi overwhelmed Morriarty's position it doesn't have too many pages devoted to it either with the exception of one or two specifically rare publications. Along with Hlobane it would however provide some collectors including those perhaps on tighter budgets to collect what would not be a particularly large range also giving the opportunity for depicting smaller vignettes within these actions.

Just a thought.

I'd suggest some Victorian era character figures from the classic cinema... Zulu, Zulu Dawn, The Man Who Would Be King, Gunga Din all come to mind as inspiration. Maybe even George Fraser's scandalous Harry Flashman VC!
