Took a chance on this fine blu-ray, and I must say it is an excellent movie that depicts the ancient world gloriously (the architecture that is, not so much the human condition). The movie takes place in Ancient Alexandria, Egypt in the approx time of 370 to 380 AD. I enjoyed the story very much, especially that of the philosopher/scientist, Hypatia (?), who has an extraordinary thirst for knowledge and a passionate drive to unravel uncertainty. Her story is quite captivating and unfolds against the beautiful backdrop of ancient Alexandria which is so wonderfully rendered, yet conversely juxtaposed w/ times of tremendous religious collisions (to say the least), teetering beneath and above the frail control of the fragmented Roman empire. I found this movie fascinating on many levels, and I think many here would enjoy it. I really enjoy movies that take you back to ancient times, especially ones like this that do it so well. Very dramatic, intense and thought provoking. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say anymore other than there is no US release for the blu-ray. I don't have a multi-region blu-ray player, nevertheless, the version of the movie I bought, which originated from Holland, does indeed play on my region A player. There is a blu-ray of the movie out from Spain, but it is my understanding that it is encoded specifically to only play in region B players. I look forward to watching it again.
