I was having a look at my Airfix 7th cavalry and Indians the other day and git wondering, did Airfix ever issue horses to go with the mounted figures?

Yes, The same horses were used in the 7TH, the Cowboys and the Indians sets. They came with a separate saddle, that had reins attached to it. The reins slipped into the horses mouth, while the saddle was held in place by the rider. The horses have two holes in their sides to accept the pegs on the riders legs.
There are 2 poses and they came only in gray.

You can see copies in cheap Cowboys and Indians bag sets from Dollar stores. Some copies are actually pretty good and very close in size to the originals. Usually they are in white plastic, but I've seen a very nice red-brown color, that is not common.

I woud bet that you've seen these dozens of times and just didn't know what they were.

The best many would say (miles better than 99.9%-100% of any other) copies were done by Hing Fat - 7th in a very close cream, and Indians in the red/brown but the real treat is the re-working/engineering of the horses and saddles, better than Airfix - worth looking for - the figures and mounts are great!

Thanks guys. Those are very good horses. I only got my Airfix riders as recasts and the horses were not included. As a child I seemed to have had only Timpo or HK copies of Timpo horses.
