The Conte crew might represent the Alamo men working in the extreme. There is a case (Off the top of my head w/o citation) of an Indian war battle with a mountain howitzer crewed by one man.
Oh yeah; and there's always the story of Molly Pitcher. We used to celebrate Molly Pitcher Day at Ft Bragg every June; they would allow the wives to come in and shoot our weapons, including the guns - in airborne units the bravest wives were allowed to go out the 34-foot Tower. But one version of the legend is she took over her husband's gun when the crew was knocked out of commission and kept it firing.
