I attended the Atlanta figure show last weekend. My first time, and it was a great time!

In addition to figures, there are awards for toy soldier displays. The display below took a gold. It's called something like preparations for the King George's coronation. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera with me. Picture is by Jay Hollopeter- I got the picture off his web site.

I believe the club putting on the dislplay is the North Carolina Toy Soldier Club. The display was a real stunner with many different glossy manufacturers represented. There were barracks sets and stable sets I have never seen. Just stunning. The back wall of the display is a mirror, which doubles the size illuson of the dispay and show the front of the buildings.

Congrats to those who put this display together.

I think we're right to be in the Carolinas, but I think it's actually the South Carolina Military Miniatures Society (SCMMS). They prepare displays as a club, for display at various shows, including their own. Their website is http://www.angelfire.com/planet/scmms/index.html

I'm looking at their site right now, to see if they were indeed the creators of this dio. It's a good guess, barring more specific info, because of the dios they've made in the past. They were also featured in Toy Soldier & Model Figure back in 2005.

And they're a great bunch of guys, too!

Prost!

Well, looks like my guess was wrong, I don't see this dio over at SCMMS' site. But it's worth it to browse their site and look at their other dios. I think most of us here would enjoy seeing them. Very much to recommend!

Prost!

Sorry, more followup-

The name didn't ring a bell, till I followed it back to PlanetFigure--Jay is "Sambaman" over there, for anyone who might visit the Planet from time to time.

He published a link to his pics from the show here:

on Photobucket. Pour yourself a cup or a glass of your favorite beverage and get ready for some browsing, because there are at least 30 pages of images in that album.

Prost!

Thanks for the research, Brad. I'm operating from memory - which is always a dangerous thing for me. I need to be in touch with Tim Tyler (Troops of Time), so I will ask him. I'm sure he knows all the details. I will post any new info here.

I was so impressed with this display, I did not want to let my fuzzy recollection of the details prevent me from sharing this with you all. I wish I had better pictures. Perhpas other photos will emerge.

I agree with your recommendation: pour yourself a glass and look at Jay's great photos at the link you posted below. FWIW, my flat is on page 5, top row - 3rd from the left. It's called "A Game of Piquet" and shows a 17th C card game. I paint mostly flats these days, but do the occasional round as well as toy soldier repair/conversion.

Cheers!

Glad to help in any way, that's what the hobby is about!

You paint flats? You must show us some pics, or even put them in a gallery for us! I have some that I've picked up over the years, some new or unpainted, others painted, all with an eye to learning to paint with oils in the German style. But I haven't really done too much with them, and the oils I've used much more for weathering my aircraft and armor models.

I posted the question in Jay's thread over at PlanetFigure, but I haven't been back there yet today. I post back here with whatever additional info he might have for us.

Prost!

I thought of doing something similar with Geroge III or Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth II. Britains has made a couple of different variations of the Coronation coach over the years which of course goes back to George the III so I could get triple duty from the coach :) Recently they also did a series devoted to the Coronation of QE II.

I have been a figure painter (military miniatures) for 30 some years - in addition to collecting, repairing and converting toy soldiers. I dabbled in flats until about 5 yrs ago when I began to paint them in earnest. As with all things, you get better if you can focus. I've had a lot of help from many friends in the hobby, and I enjoy it - which is perhaps the biggest ingredient to getting better. If you have the urge, try it! Also, you might consider joining the British Flat Figure Society (There is a small but chummy US contingent! We meet at MFCA every year.). BFFS is a great place to meet other crazies, see great painting (go to the Gallery)and learn how to paint.

The great thing about flats is that there is an endless number of subjects/periods/themes, and they are relatively cheap to buy. My eyes are too far gone for 30mm work, so I usually stick to 54mm and larger. Right now, I'm enjoying flats of great art works. I learn a lot from copying the masters and am having fun - which is the most important thing.

Here's a link to my flats page:

I got started with flats many years ago when a toy soldier buddy gave me a set of Heinrichsens. It was love at first sight. The rest is history. I've come to realize that I'm really a frustrated flat art oil painter - but I can't draw! Flats are a nice way to get someone to do the drawing for you.

I see your posts at pF, but did not realize who you are here. It's great that your interests are in both worlds - as are mine.

@ thebritfarmer - give it a go. I love the pagentry that only this type of toy soldier display can provide.

I got confirmation over at PlanetFigure, that that diorama was made by SCMMS. I'm checking their website from time to time, to see if they will put up more pictures.

Prost!

Thanks for following up, Brad. That sounds right.

I'm hoping for more pictures here if my buddy finds this thread (Walt? Is that you ?? :) ) and posts his pix. He remembers the club as SCMMS too!

We talked to a very nice gentleman there from the club - excellent resourc e on what was there. I think he put up the exhibit.

Here are some more photos of the display I took with my camera Phone so they are not real detailed.

I am also trying my first photo post from my Tree Frog Album so I hope it works.

I believe The buildings were all custom made by club members.

Thanks, Walt. These are the best pix of this display I have seen so far.

Just love the barracks. Too bad there's not one of the stables.
