Does anyone know where i can get hold of an American civil war battle map?.What i'm after is not the normal road map but more of a tourist educational type of thing. You know the sort of thing that i can unfold and see where all the battles were at a glance.Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

Greetings Rob - I believe what you need was done by National Geographic Society in their 1969 publication "The Civil War", a book that came with a seperate insert map titled "Battlefields of the Civil War". This is a folding, two-sided color map that I.D.'s the battles and locations of what appears to be most if not all the battles in all theatres. The map also shows movements, dates and brief discriptions. The book was written by Robert Paul Jordan of the NGS staff. PM me if you need more info. -- lancer

Not wanting to cross over Harris's assistance to your request but a book full of maps and battle information that I find indispensable when I tour the South is The Civil War Battlefield Guide- Second Edition- The Conversation Fund which I bought off of Amazon UK for a couple of notes.
Armed with this book all you need to know then is whether your in Virginia or Tennessee or South Carolina or Texas or Pennsylvania or................I could draw you one:D

Paid my reverential respects to Bobby Lee, Stonewall and Old Jeff when I was staying in Atlanta a couple of years ago. Very moving experience.

Actually that is the book I own, funny coincidence. I also own a book titled Who Was Who in The Civil War. Its an encyclopedia of the notable, both significant and obscure, officers and politicians.

That is what I was going to suggest !

The NGS Headquarters is here in Washington, DC - I can check for you to see if they make reprints of that issue or of the map ?

The Gettysburg Visitor Center sells some nifty computer CDs that play out the major battles of the Civil War. They are sold by individual battle. An interesting educational tool to see the actual movements of the armies in a visual format.

I'm not sure this is it, but it looks similar: http://www.travelbrains.com/Destinations/GBCWA/GBCW_school.html

Click on the battle maps at the bottom for a sample.

I came across this book tonight, The Maps of Gettysburg, and thought it might be of interest. Several experts in the field have recommended the publisher, Savas Beatie. Here is a link to the book.

Since we're on Gettysburg, this book about the retreat from Gettsyburg also looks quite interesting.
