Yesterday faced with yet another glorious English July Sunday-24hours of incessant wall to wall wind and rain-I settled down to read the Sunday papers and came across a quote from that quintessential and slightly cranky Englishman John Cleese. Apparently Cleese has now taken out American citizenship ensconced somewhere in California and when asked Why? stated

"At my age any one day spent in England is one day off of your life"

Asked to elaborate from the Brit reporter he followed up with:

"Well that's easy!, Taxed to the hilt by a corrupt government who spend most of their time filling in their expenses sheets and the rest spent cooking up more stealth taxes to pay for them. The worst rip off prices in the western world for every single thing or commodity you purchase. Full of illegal immigrants most claiming benefits and Oh yes! nearly forgot it rains all of the time-now given a choice why on earth would anyone want to live in the UK? Good day!"

As I locked up at mid-night with the rain still lashing the windows it did cross my mind that old Basil Fawlty just may have a point.

Pity that, well "There will always be an England", right?:) Not to worry though, we may well join you the way we are heading.:(;)

I doubt that will ever happen and enough said from me on the subject.

Guys the original quote was about the UK not the good old US of A afterall that's where old Basil has laid his hat. :D
Yes of course, my observation was about us; John may end up surprised, especially in California.;):D

Leaving aside the political aspect for a min (it does annoy me when actors, sportsman etc are happy to make their living over here and take the public's money-but oh dear i don't want to pay taxes-Connery is another guy that makes me laugh, big SNP guy and wants to break up Great Britain, but where does he live?!!) you both have a point, this non stop rain is truly depressing. We have two glorious weeks of sunshine during Wimbledon and people are talking of heatwave summer, barbecue summer, don't forget to take bottled water on the underground, bla bla bla and it hasn't stopped raining since!.And its not just rain its cold as well, felt more like March than July this morning.

Still for all its many problems (you only listed a few of them)i wouldn't live anywhere else, you see Bob its MY home,MY country and wherever i've been in the world, and i've seen some wonderful places, England is my place.Born in England die in England mate;).(especially if i walk the streets of Lambeth at Night!!!):D

I can say that the grass isn't always greener on the otherside (granted I haven't got his money so I guess that would help). Visiting a place is not the same as living there.

Just to clarify mate-I didn't list them-I was quoting what Basil quoted......

..... but as that damm rain continued to lash down last night after a solid 24 hours (make that 24 days) as I let my dog Bobby Lee out for his walk around the manor and then spent 30 minutes drying him off (again) it crossed my mind that I sure as hell would like to be in California in July-just to have 3 no make that 2 days of guaranteed continual sunshine in any one month is something us Brits can only dream of!

LOL-LOL-LOL, have just seen this Reb - how absolutely TRUE.
Time to man the barricades mate and come the revolution, send the lot of them to Madame Guillotine along with all the parasite hangers-on...!!! Including the worst of them all - those creatures sitting in Edinburgh.

Thanks
Harry

Well we recently got Christopher Hitchens from the UK and my cool next door neighbor as well. How about John Cleese and maybe Richard Dawkins too?

Yo Reb, know the feeling mate, same in Ireland it has rained the last three years none stop. Its that bad you cant even pick a day for a Barbeque. No summer for three years and I did read somewhere on the forum someone saying Global warming is a load of Bull. Well watch the news half the world is on fire the other half are sinking lol. Think its time to get the Arc built. Lucky I dont use the Bog (turf) for fires anymore, the people who do are having real problems getting it dried to lift, so say thank you British Gas lol, I worked for them for 25 years, bless them.
Bernard.

Well that is what is has been doing up here in New England. Perhaps we were well named afterall.:D

Yep, I try to get to the beach anytime the sun comes out. Luckily I'm only a few minutes from a great beach here in Gloucester. The staff and concession folks there tell me the money rolls in when the sun is out but because of how this summer's weather has been, the concessions and the city are in the red.

all of the feelings and politcs aside, one thing you have to respect is that he took issue with something and did something about it.

So many people in the US say things like "if x gets elected I am leaving for good" and stuff like that.

When ever I see Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam singer) and Alec Baldwin I wonder what they are doing here and why they're not in France, Canada, UK or someplace else.
