Congratulations Martyn on a very fine reproduction of my late brother Gordon’s superb, toy soldier (sailor perhaps) representation of the USS San Pueblo better known as ‘The Sand Pebbles’ from the movie of the same name.

A wee bit of background... Gordon and myself were big fans of this great 1966 Steve McQueen movie. Both of us saw the film when it was first released back in the 60’s, little realizing that years later we would end up living and working in China (albeit Hong Kong).

Together we told the story behind our ‘Sand Pebbles’ and the US Navy figures we used to ‘crew’ the vessel with in Issue #22 of King & Country’s ‘COLLECTOR’ magazine in Winter 2008. (Click HERE See a Full digital copy online)

Here are a few pages of that article.

Congratulations must also go to Mr. Patrick Adams of The British Toy Soldier Company for his very own fine reproduction of our original design.

I was only too pleased when Patrick contacted me before setting out on this ‘voyage’ and major project.

Once more congrats all around and... “Anchors Aweigh!”
Andy

P.S. I love how you have also included various “Streets of Old Hong Kong” figures in the scene.
On another point... See if you can pick out any minor details of difference between Gordon's original 'Sand Pebbles' and Patrick / Martyn's 'San Pueblo'...?

Hi Andy

Many thanks for your kind comments and the link to issue #22 "Storm over the Yangtse", I'm after a hard back copy but I did manage to pick up the Collector Magazine #54 which has the USS San Pueblo featured on the great double page spread long with the single page.

When the US Navy figures were released back in 2008/9 my wife Marie bought all the figures for me, apart from the launch and 3 seated sailors, I ordered them via my very good friend Lynn Kenwood of MKL. At this time Patrick was making a Nile paddle steamer for me and I did mention to him about the possibility of a model of the USS San Pueblo based on the terrific model Gordon had made and which was featured in the advertising for the USN range of figures, at the time the idea was put "on the back burner" and to be honest slipped from my mind. The idea blossomed again in 2020 when I spotted a seller on Ebay selling the helmsman and Lewis gunner from the launch as single pieces, no launch. I managed to win them, no one else bid on them I then picked up the 3 sailors and most of the USMC China Marines from the same seller. The launch followed along with the missing China Marines from a great Treefrogger in the States, David Mason

I love the Streets of Old Hong Kong series and have been very lucky to find several of the older sets along with buying a few of the new releases, any chance some SOOHK might appear in the 'End-of-The-Run Remainders'

Stay safe

Martyn:)

Martyn, I have an extra copy of Issue 22 and I’d be pleased to send it to you. If there are any other issues you need, please let me know.

I’m assuming your address hasn’t changed.

Brad

I've always felt Gordon's model of the USS San Pueblo was one of the coolest diorama pieces ever. Thanks Andy for resurrecting it's history and the Collector magazine back issue!
