That's a beautiful tank, but I like the ones with blue in the camouflage even better.

What is shown in the photo is an M4A2 (welded hull, diesel engine), know to the British Army as a "Sherman III". Most of the Shermans supplied to 8th Army were M4A1 "Sherman II" (cast hull, radial engine) but there were some Sherman III's received by the 8th Army just before Alamein. This is the most common camouflage applied at that time. The green/blue/light stone "Caunter" camouflage was an earlier scheme that pre-dated the arrival of the Grants and Shermans. Nice model!

Gary,

Apparently you have caught Andy taking another historical liberty, as he did both his and my 8th Army Sherman in the "Caunter" camouflage you describe.

Now that is a fine looking sherman, would love that to back up my desert troops. So these MK111 Took part at Alamein then, were they 76mm or 75mm?I also agree it would be great to have Monty's Grant tank as in the Imperial War Museum,London.Good suggestion John.

Rob

I can't believe Andy hasn't done Monty's Grant be now. Considering Andy's propensity to reproduce early vehicles in improved detail, you would think the Bogart/Sahara M3 would be ripe for a refit.

I've just watched a prog on the History channel called Gladiators of WW2 -Desert rats. And although the film of the Shermans was in B/W you could still make out the pattern of that camo John is talking about, and it does look good even in B/W!.Also it followed the 8th army into Normandy and there were some good shots of the Staghound armd car.I really do like KC'S Staghound, one of my faves.

All Shermans at Alamein would be early versions with 75mm guns in the early "narrow" gun shield with exposed co-axial MG. At that time the big advantage of the 75mm guns on the Lee/Grant and Sherman was their ability to use the 75mm to toss HE shells at the German 88's and other AT guns.

N. Africa ?

:) Some of the ADD-ONS, for N. Africa suggestions, would be: Tank Riders, for 8th Army, and DAK? Italian ( BlackShirts)---MG TEam---Mortar Team----Motorcycle Dispatch Rider; and of course M_13/40 Tank--Semovente 40-Self-Propelled--AB41-Armored Car? A NEBELWERFER-( Rocket Artillery) Team-----A PAK 40-Anti-Tank Gun Team-----1.5CM-150mm( HEAVY) FIELD HOWITZER GUN and Crew?----------Wounded for Both Sides( Britsh and DAK? NEW PANZER IV TANK-( Short Barrel)Gun!

Agree with all those in principle John but did Commonwealth infantry do much tank riding at that time? Need a bedford, and a desert bren and and and ......

Hi Fred-

In UK, the Chancellor is in charge of the finances and the treasury (Chancellor of the Exchequer).

Pierre.

As Pierre said, the Chancellor of the Exchequer determines how much of my hard earned cash gets diverted away from funding my hobbies and goes towards the Government coffers. :(

Al Capone, eat yer heart out, Winston is in town! :D
