This buyer purchased a two figure set. He receives it and a week or so later tells me I forgot to ship one of the figures (I know I shipped both). He says the single figure is of no interest so he'd like to return it for a full refund. In the off chance I shipped one piece and to make things easy, I agree.

Those of you who have bought from me know that I ship loose figures wrapped in toilet paper and use peanuts to secure anything which can break loose. Well, I receive the figure back in stacked ill fitting foam with some masking tape around it, packed not in a box but a fedex envelope only. So, I open the package and the figure is damaged - surprise, surprise.

I message the buyer and tell him what happened. He says he has a hard time believing what I described so I sent him photos.

The two figures sold for $49. His email to me was exactly this:

"it is hard to believe that the figure arrived damaged, the packaging was very neat, it was the box from one of the old figarti knigts toys,
an so far nothing that I've received packaged
like that or sent got damaged. Anyway, since
the set I ordered from you did not
arrive as appeared on the picture, I believe it
is your responsibility to refund at least $40.
I do not have the insurance, but I can definitely file a claim
through the buyers protection service if necessary."

My exact response except for the name:

"I've sent you photos of how that figure arrived ,XXX. It is clear to see that you caused damage to it. Putting a figure in ill-fitting foam will not protect a figure made from soft metal.

Let me get this straight, you want me to refund all but $9? No way. I'll refund $25 based upon what we agreed upon.

The dispute process will not award you $40 on this as there is protection for me in accepting return and receiving the item damaged. The dispute process would not take into account return shipping neither.

You should have done a better job packing that figure - at least using that foam and putting in in a cardboard box might have helped - but you didn't, you just stuck it in a FedEx shipping envelope and that's on you. When have you ever received a figure packed the way you sent it to me?

Really, this is very disrespectful.

I'm offering $25. If you do not agree then lets get on with the dispute process."

His response exactly:

"I wish to no longer argue on the subject and will
not comment on anything.
I agree to your offer of $25. Please refund as soon as you can and will leave it that.
Regards"

Arrogant. If you want to know who this is, PM and I'll give you the buyer id and details.

A loose figure packed inside an envelope:eek:? How can anyone do that? I wish you better luck next time...

Paulo, I usually have fine luck. Most people are upstanding and honorable but every once in a while you get a person like this. Sadly, eBay policies empower people to behave this way.

Back when we sellers could leave negative feedback there was some degree of balance but that is gone now. This person can leave me a negative if he wishes.

Also, the figure was put in some stacked foam thing and scotch tape wrapped around it and put into a fedex shipping envelope with no insurance. But I love how he says there was no insurance but he could definitely use the buyer protection option to get his money back.

This is how he shipped the figure back to me:

If I sent a figure to any of you board members how would you react? And, I know most of you wouldn't return an item like this neither.

Hi Gideon,
PM me so I can get this on the block list. No need for this headache.
Tom

I once had a customer return a 25.00 1:6th scale M1 Garand in a letter envelope with no padding at all. Needless to say it was in pieces. The guy told me he couldn't understand why it was damaged because he always shipped items like that. When I refused to give him a refund he disputed the charge for the entire order. Which I ended up eating. I am constantly amazed at how some peoples thought process works.

See, that's the thing - there is no thought process. You are an afterthought. Nothing more.

If I have to deal with this again, I am going by the book and going through the dispute process. That way everything gets documented and I can put pressure on eBay and Paypal to do the right thing. There is a statement that if somebody is returning an item that it has to arrive the same as how the buyer initially received it.
