Last week on the local news this was one of the lead stories. The Little People of America were having a convention in St Louis, 1200 strong. And they were demanding and signing a petition that a high school 50 miles out of St Louis in Freeburg, Il change the name of their school team "The Freeburg Midgets". They found this dehumanizing, and what other horrific terms you want to come up with. The school got the nickname in the 30's because their basketball team was good but small.
I mean when will this end?

If people with Dwarfism consider the word offensive then it should be changed. Why is that difficult to understand?

For all the PC people, no matter what descriptive word replaces the out-of-favour descriptive word, it too will become offensive to some people and again have to be changed.
Hence the battle over time and back and forth from one descriptor to another from negro to colored to black to african-american.

The point is that people also try to shut down debate by claiming that the ideas they oppose are offensive. Everyone finds something offensive. But there is no right not to be offended. That might be difficult to understand.

Also, I'm not sure midgets are dwarfs. I thought midgets are small but have normal proportions, and dwarfs have torsos and heads of normal size, with proportionately smaller limbs.

I know what your saying, I have always thought midget was an accepted term for dwarfs with normal proportions. I've since done some research that suggested the term midget was derogatory from the outset and can now understand why short people would prefer the term was no longer applied. It won't matter to me that the term 'midget' is likely to be officially changed. Will it matter to you and others here that think this is risible or some challenge to their accepted 'beliefs'?

Just an update. The #1 story on the top local news tonight was that the Freeburg Il. school board voted to keep the nickname for it's high school "The Midgets".
Now everyone can sleep tight knowing this earth shakeing information. So Little People, live with it!
