Hi Louis,

thank you for yr always generous comment. I'm not out of the woods yet, tiger...

The ptg itself has ambiguous details. It seems that the artist painted at least 3 ptgs based on this theme. All of them shows the workshop in the loft and it is a messy place. So what I am going to do is to use an amalgam of the three ptgs to create the workshop scene with details.

For eg, Stradivari's turban was multi-coloured in two other ptgs. The main ptg shows only a hint of this. The bkgd scene also seems to shift. The violins sunning on the verandah appears to be shifted to catch the morning and afternoon sun.

As I am trying to compress the scene, I have to use theatrical stage "wings" to mask off the scene on the sides.

Another tricky part is to get the light to illuminate the bkgd and shine into the darkened interior. I'm working that one out right now.

The box has been stained and varnished.

Ive completed the room structure and installed all the roof planking and battens. The room has been painted,
Next is the nearby tree and foliage.

OK. here's the one and only "backstage view" of this scene. This shows the branches attached to a wad of putty.

Notice the lack of any real modelling skills.

Must stop showing you these views; otherwise, they'll kick me out of the BBDS.

Better Box Dioramas Society...hahahaha.

Added foliage.

I fixed the lights and got it to shine into the room! I'm quite pleased with the effect.

Now working on the details. I am scouring the web for details of violin tools and bits. This is to create the clutter in this scene

For the table, I added a tiny nail and more wood chips to simulate a vice attached to the table.

I am knocking up what appears to be part of a bedpost and railings next to the side table.

A computer glitch prevented me from posting pix. I seem to have solved it.

Here's the update on the WIP. The bed has been completed and airbrushed. The box has been stained and varnished and testfit of the piece is OK.

I did more to the diorama, adding details and adjusting all the pieces to fit.

The boy's pose was reshaped. A lute was crafted and another violin was added to the scene. A violin former was made from thick lead strip and other accessories were added from scalelink and Historex.

The bed has been added to the scene.

Now moving along very quickly.

I created a proper viewing frame to test the lights.

First pic is natural lighting.

Second pic is one set of lights.

Third pic is when I added a second set of lights for the interior.

Fourth pic is the front of the shadowbox.

Added more details and clutter to create interest. Still expt with reflecting the lights.

Notice how dark the shadowbox is without internal lighting.

Final completion. A very satisfying piece. Thanks for watching.
