Something bigger in the near future???

g-1.jpg

In front-line service with the Luftstreitkräfte, the G.III series equipped a large portion of the bomber force until the end of the war. The G.III series bombers served mainly on the Western Front where they were used to great effect, mostly in nocturnal attacks, on both tactical targets behind the Allied front-lines as well as for strategic air raids on major urban centers such as Paris. As far as is known no Friedrichshafen bombers of any type ever participated in strategic air raids on Britain because they lacked the range needed. The attacks on Britain were conducted exclusively by Gotha G.IV and G.V medium bombers, Zeppelin Staaken R.IV heavy bombers and Zeppelin airships. The G.III was generally well liked by its military crews for its superior load carrying capability, reliability, robustness and relatively low accident rate.

It would be a beauty. I think I would have problems finding a place to put such a large craft as it would be bigger than, well, my home.{eek3} Nice to dream though. -- Al

Someone calculated the wingspan of a 1/30 Gotha as 31 inches. Imagine the box! Not for the faint of heart. I put the chances as very slim due to the size and cost. Probably around $350. But you never know - maybe special edition land limited to 50-75? I could see them selling like hot cakes.

At $350 the Gotha or Giant would be a relative bargain. I don't see it how it could be done that cheap. Two wings of 31 inch span and all that extra wire bracing alone would drive the price up, IMO. The LE idea could be the solution if the complicated rigging and the size can somehow be made cost effective for the maker. I imagine making wings of that size in the lightweight, thin material that JJD uses, will present many challenges, warping among them. -- Al
