Hi.

I am unable to afford any of the Heyde figures for the sack of Troy. A few years ago, however, I did run across the name of a company that made copies of Heyde figures. While not cheap, I am curious as to how much they would charge. I checked on the web and could not find the company. I seem to recall the name was Heyde Replicant.

Does any one have any further information such as an address of some sort or news of the company's demise?

Thanks,
MikeNick

I wonder how legal that is, unless they have Heyde's consent.

As I understand it Brad, copyright protection on sculptures (which includes Toy Soldiers), lasts for 70 years from the year of the death of the sculptor.

Given that Heyde began production of items from 1870 ( some 143 years ago) - could it not be possible that the copyright protection which applied to some of their earlier pieces has expired? Would love to hear your views on that piece of legislation which applies to copyright.

I don't know if such a firm as Heyde Replicants exists - or ever existed - so can't help you there Mike. Of course, they MAY have existed and gone out of business - and even MAY have had an agreement with Heyde??????

I do know that a company called "Replicants", who make Plastic Toy Soldiers exists in the UK. Find them here - http://www.replastic.com/

I believe that Joe Shimeck (sp?) in Texas makes Heyde-like sets under the name of Potsdamer Zinnfiguren. He usually attends the Chicago Show.

As far as copyrights are concerned, Heyde basically didn't survive the war, and the founding of the German Democratic Republic. Their facilities were severely damaged or destroyed in the raids on Dresden, and the last reference to any Heyde products was in 1947.

As far as other makers making Heyde-like figures is concerned, Mike is correct, retired USA officer Joe Shimek produces Heyde-like figures as Potsdamer Zinnsoldaten. His figures are in Heyde's style, though I think the detail is crisper than on the old Heyde figures. I've never heard of any company like "Heyde-Replicant", and a Google search didn't turn up anything relevant. I don't think Col. Shimek has reproduced the Sack of Troy box set, either. However, it's worth contacting him to ask.

Hope that helps, prosit!
Brad

If the company ceased to exist and the rights were not sold - which I think is the case - the trademark and the copyrights would be fair game. To maintain a trademark you have to have it registered with the patent and trademark office and be using it. Otherwise, it could be deemed abandoned and subject to attack. I wouldn't be surprised if Berlin Zinnfiguren own the Heyde trademark.

Hi Mike - I had a look around the web myself last evening - for "Replica Heyde figures" - and found another supplier in USA - as well as the Berliner Zinnfiguren Company ( from which I've bought castings from myself, on previous occasions). Here's another link to the American Company, which is in St Louis. Might be useful to American purchasers - and avoid import taxes etc.

I see that some of their offerings also feature on the Berlin site - so they may very well get them from there. Another thing the American Company offers - is spare parts for Heyde figures - so that broken pieces may be repaired. How interesting. jb

Sounds a reasonable assumption Brad - especially as Berliner Zinnfiguren is a well respected German shop - which is very well known. I have also found another online outlet for what look like either the same (or some very similar) figures in the USA. My last post referred to them.

Thanks for the info. jb

I'll ask the staff at BZ about it. The company is listed as "Heyde Replika" and "Heyde" in their catalog. I'm curious to know, too.

Prost!

Actually Brad - whilst you're in "Asking Mode" at BZ - maybe ask them about providing at least some of their range of "Heyde Repicas" in castings form?

I see that they have pages of Painted replica figures - but none listed in bare metal. If they are producing them from scratch from old or refurbished moulds - could they consider letting some of them go without bothering their painters - for the likes of you and me perhaps??????{sm4}

Doesn't hurt to ask - eh???? jb:salute:: (P.S. I've already e-mailed that question to them){sm3}
