Hi Guys,

Oz touched on this subject in a recent post and I thought I should give you my perspective for what it’s worth...

Obviously, I don’t think there are too many because the demand for new concepts...ideas...themes is constantly growing. Just look and listen to the “voice” on this Forum alone.

Toy Soldier collectors, in my experience, have an almost inexhaustible enthusiasm for virtually every aspect and era of history — military and otherwise — spanning the centuries.

King & Country in general and me in particular look at as many areas and eras as possible and select what we think the average collector would be interested in and, obviously, what we think will sell. I would be a liar if I did not also admit that the subjects chosen are usually ones that I am interested in as well!

That’s the advantage of owning your own toy soldier company.

Over the years this policy has served collectors all over the world and K&C pretty well. Remember I started out as a collector myself (and I’m proud to say still am). So I like to think I know a wee bit of the collecting mentality.

As the hobby and K&C has grown so, naturally, has the number of series and ranges. Thanks to the Internet, great “word of mouth” and our many fine dealers more and more people are becoming collectors. These people, as I said earlier, have a wide and diverse interest in many historical periods. It seems just plain old common sense to try and cater for the needs and requirements of at least some of these people. Plus it’s great for me and my creative team...

It’s nice sometimes to complete a whole bunch of “WW2 Germans” and then the next day to be totally immersed in creating additional “Ancient Egyptians” or “Napoleonic Cavalry”. It keeps all of us excited and fresh.

Now, I know it can be costly if you’re into collecting several different series but here’s the joy...you have the ability to pick and choose what you like most and what you can afford. All of us in life cannot get all the toys we want all at the same time. But isn’t it great that at this point in time...at this juncture of the hobby...we all have a wealth of great product to select from. Obviously I don’t just mean K&C...but also Figarti...Honour Bound...the new Britains...to name but a few.

“Are there too many different K&C ranges?” I really don’t think so...Remember if K&C did not produce this range or that series I’m sure one or other of our worthy competitors would be only too please to jump in.

Anyway that’s my tuppence worth. Best wishes and...happy collecting!

Hi Andy, I for one don't think there are too many ranges either. We all joke about wanting all the ranges but as you say its all about choice. Also some of the ranges appeal to some people and not others.I don't collect Egyptians,SOHK etc but love your WW2 stuff,i will also be buying Napoleonic and WW1 ranges.I can't see why anyone could complain really,no one could possibly collect them all.Apart from Bill Gates perhaps!.Keep up the good work

Rob

Too many ranges? You're kidding right? Everyone (myself included) is always after you for more of what they are interested in. And what you produce seems to be flying off the shelves. So Andy, you just keep producing it, and we'll keep buying it. And guys, if you can't afford all of it, buy what you can afford and want most. That's what I do. I have neither the means nor the room (even with my new museum) to collect all of the ranges.

For the record, this is what Oz said yesterday:

"There are now to many ranges for most people to collect and I suspect the majority will stick to their current themes rather than venture far into the new ranges such as Saracens etc. The era difference is a barrier in itself to most people and guys that collect the larger 1/30 K & C figs are less likely to buy many 1/32 figs imo."

Louis,if you don't mind me asking. What ranges do you collect?.Being the custodian of the museum i just wondered what ranges you go for.

Rob

In the thread where Oz's quote appeared, Ron had asked how many ranges K & C had and I answered 23, both current (12) and retired (11). I had counted British and French Napoleonics as one range and the same for American Revolution.

However, they probably should be counted as separate ranges and that would bring the number to 25. The same rule would then apply to World War II, which has a total of 14 ranges so that would bring it up 38 so that the new count would be 22 current and 16 retired. This is based on Bill Sager's site and I haven't included the old glossies since there is not a specific range they fit into or the Warbirds (wooden or polystone).

Charge of the Light Brigade and World War I will bring this up to 40 and who knows what else Andy has in store?

I AGREE WITH LOUIS ! Dont stop - Keep them coming!!

We love all your work - As I have said before, King and Country has changed the Toy Soldier Hobby for the better. The more you do - the more you inspire others to follow and do other things.

I am really impressed that you have so many ranges now. But, lets not forget one thing:

Are there to many stars?
Can there be to many grandchildren?
Are there to many books?
Are there to many late 60's and early 70's muscle cars?
Are there to many songs?
Are there to many wines?
Are there to many whiskeys?
Are there to many women?
Are there to many flowers?
Are there to many any things?
Remember, most of us are men. And the base philosophy of manhood is "more is better."
Therefore, like stars, grandchildren, books, muscle cars, songs, wines, whiskeys, women, flowers and other “stuff,” more K&C ranges is better…At least as far as I am concerned.

Well i think that sums it up rather nicely!

Rob

Andy,

I think it’s wonderful for King and Country to introduce new ranges, as long as you don’t stop making the old ranges that I collect.

Starting a new range is like taking on a new pet, it’s now your responsibility to feed it, by continuing to add new figures.

This thread seems a bit silly. I think the original point was that it is not possible to collect everything, not that KC should stop producing different ranges.

A bit silly is a bit of an understatement. Thank you Doug.

I love Combats "a bit silly" very Pythonesque!

Rob

Oz's point and Andy's point are related so I don't see this as silly at all. Oz was saying that it's impossible to collect everything, a point with which we all agree. Andy is saying (if not explicitly, implicitly) that while that is true, that is because K & C will always have a lot of different ranges and probably more to collect in the future.

At the very least, it's good to see a statement of his philosophy (or the company's).

I don 't think there are to manny k & c ranges .
i am glad there are so manny .
i don 't collect all the ranges so i can save for the models i like .
but i am enjoy all the ranges k & C brings out .
I collect ww 2 and napolleon and some crusaders and some other toy's.

richard .:)
