Hi,
I have just finished reading «Armageddon,The battle for Germany 1944-45», from Sir Max Hastings. It is a very interesting book which focuses on the final allied attack on Germany, both from the Western Front and the Eastern one. The Battle of The Bulge, Arnhem ( the bridge too far ), the fall of Berlin but also less known episodes like the massive fleeing from the Red Army in Eastern Germany or the Hunger Winter in Holland in 1944. Interesting comparison on the war efforts on the Western front and on the Eastern front, paying deserved recognition to the Red Army's role in defeating Germany and acknowledging the harsher, absolutely ruthless fighting on the East, backed by devastating numbers, while also respecting and very well depicting what went on in the West. Also good analysis on Monty, Patton, Ike, Rokossovsky, Zhukov, Konev, their best and their worse, the Germans and the military tactics, equipment, merits and demerits from all sides. Special attention to witnesses that were lucky to survive to tell the story. A very complete portrait of the period. I believe this is a real must read for anyone interested in WWII history. From here I shall probably go to Overlord from the same author.

Happy reading/collecting,
Paulo

This an excellent book that I read earlier this year. It's more or less a continuation of Overlord, which is also excellent. He is a very good writer and I would describe myself as a Max Hastings fan. I've also read Das Reich about that march of that division from its base in Southern France to Normandy in June 1994 as well as his more recent Warriors, mini biographies of notable soldiers and of certain traits that he wished to highlight.

For those reading about D Day, another really excellent book is by Carlo D'Este, as well as John Keegan's 6 Armies in Normandy but D'Este book is spectacular for his analysis of various controversies and tactics during the Normandy campaign.

These three historians are some of my favorite writers. Did not read Max Hastings book on Armageddon yet. On the Pacific War I enjoy reading Eric Hammel's three books on air- ground- and sea battles for Guadacanal. Also Franke book on battle of Guadacanal. Leadmen
