I thought you did a great job with selecting the armor- missed mine for the most part but it's a pretty good list.

I gotta say, KC has a lot of armor fans out there and I know there are a lot of fans of armor in general on this forum. I just wish you guys could've had some of the experience with the "Big Guns" like myself or Dave have had. You really REALLY REALLY have no idea what it's like to sit in as a driver or gunner or just be part of a modern day tank crew- an Abrams (or probably any of the Abrams spinoffs like Merkava, Challenger, Leopard II, etc). It is just OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! 55 tons of twisted steel and sex appeal.

The Abrams, you tuck yourself nice and snug right under that big 120 mike mike and you sit like you are on a Harley- no joke, it has these huge lateral controls that you operate it with. And then, just cruise across the desert- nothing like it in the world- and I mean, that Jet turbine gets ROCKIN and you just float across the desert just knocking stuff out left and right. Instantly, you know you are in the most powerful battle machine on the planet and you just feel the rush of 3 millenium of cavalry/ heavy weapons warfare come alive at the controls.........

oh man...........you would just have to experience it to fully appreciate it. It's like taking a 65 Mustang or 68 Camaro across Satans Highway (when it was there) and just letting the top down, cranking the radio up and letting loose...............just nothing like it fellas.

Thats a fantastic description Chris,i wouldn't want to be facing it on the battlefield.

It's a little ironic that it uses a German gun (I know, I know, an American version of a German gun). ;)

Here is an interesting site on the various ammunition available for the 120mm

Chris,

Where do I report for my ride? I'm short enough to feel comfortable in a tank, but I think I've gotten too wide to fit through the hatches - can I spray them with PAM?

I got to drive an M60 for about a block back in the 70's (a fellow was trying to get me to join the USAR) - even that is quite an experience! I've gotten to ride a few things - M41 light tank, M113APC, M7 Priest, and halftrack and I do love to get to ride in armored vehicles. I can see where you get the rush.

I'd love to get to go to a range where Abrams are doing live fire, I'll bet that is quite an experience too. The Army could offset their cost by selling tickets to a viewing stand at the range area. I'd go for the season pass.

Gary

As a surprise Birthday present my wife took me along to Mornington Penisula in Victoria , had no idea what she'd organised, but it was a day of of driving around in a Saracen and Ferret, they gave you instruction on how to drive it, the preselector gears gears weren't too hard to master, and once you got the hang of it , the foot was down, it wasn't quite the same after that driving the car home- real adrenaline rush....Next up is their Centurion tank :D

 You know what I'm listing already? ------ SHERMAN (Firefly)---CROMWELL Tank----ARCHER-Self Propelled for NORMANDY/Arnhem!-------N.Africa----M-3 GRANT-----MKIII CRUSADER Tank-------M-3 HONEY---------M4AI-(Desert )Sherman)------M-7 PRIEST S.P.-------AEC DAIMLER Armored Car or MK II/III HUMBER Armored Car! CIAO!:D

Hey Chris, did you ever wire your intercom to play Rock'n Roll? Our sigs guys configured our tanks to jam out to some tunes but interupt when you recieved a radio message or clicked on the internal coms:cool:. We also had a special contest on the old M-60A3, something to do with the rolled down padding for spent casings, can't say anything more as this is a family forum:D:eek:!

That's a great list! I'd take any one of those vehicles, especially the Cromwell or Grant:).

I picked the M7 Priest and Stug with long barrel and skirts because the Stug looks good anywhere as long as it has camo and a machine gunner figure. The M7 is good because it is an open topped vehicle so one can see inside and see the figures: commander with 50 cal machine gun and the 105mm gun crew.

Any Allied armour for north Africa gets my vote , I thought they where
outgunned 18 months ago ;). But now they are well and truly %&%&$#:).
Either that or a LOT of anti tank guns.

Both of those are cool vehicles. One of the few items i really regret missing was the Priest.I'd love to see another of these in any theatre that it operated in,especially Normandy. As you say its an interesting vehicle and i can imagine plenty of detail and crew.As for the Stug well what can you say,it was part of the armoured backbone of the German army and speaking personally i could buy a Stug in every theatre or version. But whatever happens this year it sounds as if we are in for an armoured treat:)

Rob

A Priest would be great! I just finished reading an article on them and it had some really terrific pictures:cool:. Still need some allied armour/arty support, it may be time to requisition the crusader catapult or anything else able to hurl large objects thru the air.:D

HA!!! Yes sir, ironically enough, some of the teams I linked up with did in fact do that- particular favorites were Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses and various other GNR tunes. I was partial to Iggy and the Stooges- Search and Destroy!!! Occasionally someone would put on Ride of the Valkyries to sort of emulate Apocalypse Now.

As you can probably imagine- the chain of command wasn't too keen on it and it resulted in some additional details for some of us- yes, chuckleheads like me:)

YEAH BABY!!!

The Abrams project was a collective really of NATO nations sharing technology- it has the UK's Chobham armor as well.

Yeah, can anything be better than sporting a 120mm from a company called RHEINMETAL????:D

That's probably not a half bad idea Gary!! Trust me, seeing a combined live fire at the battalion level complete with Abrams, Bradleys and then a supporting compliment of Apache's- MAN ALIVE!! That is a rush!!! I've seen a few done before- once I even got to see some A10 Warthog's tag along for the ride!!! Talk about a symphony of destruction!!

You were in the wrong unit my friend! I was part of the c of c and I loved it:cool:! Nothing like CCR to boost morale;).

Actually, I am big fan of CCR myself as well. I always like to play Fortunate Son whenever I get my Huey and Vietnam figures out.

I love 'Bad moon rising' and 'Up around the bend'
