I absolutely refuse to count a single solitary farmyard chicken yet, but at least we are playing well. But as the Cricket world knows Australia will simply not give up but it has been a good game so far. It's very exciting when it ebbs and flows like this.

In first innings and at 45-3 I thought we were in for another long disappointing summer from the off, but at least we are slugging it out with them.

I know I'm in a minority in this country when I say this but give me Cricket over football anytime, Cricket has been in my blood since I discovered I was a fast bowler (about 100 yrs ago^&grin)

As a Yorkshireman i was born with cricket in my blood . Like you my strike bowling days are many moons ago .

Follow Yorkshire more than England but the two are looking the same grp of players these days ...maybe why they have improved:)

Well done England! Excellent victory over a very good side. Superb bowling performance (and a stunning catch by our captain)today that saw us win by a 169 margin I couldn't have imagined on day one. If Australia had held on for the rest of the evening it is highly possible it would have been a draw as rain is forecast across Britain tomorrow. Well played Australia there is no finer Cricket competition in the world than the Ashes^&cool

Long way to go yet but a good start.

Love Cricket especially Test Matches. As an offie and an opening bat I hope to have a few more years at village level.

I never expected England to win even one match, now I just don't know. I thought the Australians would make more of a fight of it in the second innings but in the afternoon it was abject surrender. Interesting to see the Aussie side for the next match, as I don't know if Starc is available or if Watson and Haddin will be dropped.

Pressure on Clarke and co for a change...........

No pressure mate why drop Haddin he made 1 mistake,Watson is another story but if they drop him that would of been his last game and I'm sure England don't want Mitch Marsh playing he is younger faster and more powerful than Watson.

Where not England mate and panic,no pressure on Clarky was only 1 loss i can't see England smashing us 5 nil !! The cricket gods where on your side this time.

Heroes to zeros in a matter of days !!!

All out for 103 in the second innings !!!

Well played Aussies

Series level - next one will be interesting to see who the momentum is with

Australia were different class over the last few days. We do need to look at the top four, we can't always be 44 for 3 before the middle order kicks in.

You would hate to be looking for consistency in the press coverage of the Ashes. Australia was ready to steamroll a weak and dispirited England, then a revitalised England who had played exciting cricket against NZ was ready to take Australia down, then Mitchell Johnson was going to blow a weak England top order away, then England defeated an arrogant and complacent Australia and now with an Australian victory in the second Test we have come full circle. Can that much really have changed in a three week period? The journalists are really writing a narrative rather than trying to accurately assess what they are actually watching. If there is one lesson to be learnt, that surely is that no team is as good as we think and no team is as bad.

The standout was clearly Steve Smith but, it must be said, he does not possess a technique that will allow him to score runs easily when he is out of form like an Allan Border or a David Boon. That said, at present it is difficult to picture what an out of form Smith might look like.

Watson is finished. I like him but even if he scored ten centuries in the next 18 months he would still end his career as an underachiever given his prodigious talent.

Australia's pace bowling is strong.

The success of Rogers in a variety of conditions shows that years in the Shield and County Cricket make a man tough. Selection is not always about the 22 year olds.

Clarke is a worry but is still good enough if his body holds up but the sun must be setting on his career.

Ian Bell was once a stand out performer. He has been a wonderful cricketer but he is struggling.

The decision to make wickets batting friendly yet have both Tests finish in four days? Can no-one block anymore? Where is Boycott when you need him? Is Cook the only Englishman prepared to bat a full day for a hundred (or nearly?)

Good to see Australia win but there must be a couple of tough English qualified players the equivalent of Rogers who have the technique and the temperament to play Test cricket. Does anyone remember David Steele in 1975?

Firstly - I missed the start of the thread but I wanted to congratulate England on a fine 1st Test win! Australia looked disorganised but really should've saved the game given the 5th day was lost to rain (I think). I was willing Watson to get 70 or so and be the hero but he disappointed - again. Yes, time to farewell him.

Also, my son has just turned five. His favourite DVD is my '2013/14 Ashes Highlights'. As such, he thinks Australia always wins. This result was quite a shock to him!

Secondly - both these first games are why I don't bet on sport - I have no idea!! I thought Australia would win the first game, then I thought England would continue being on top at Lords. I think I've gotten the results wrong for the last five series too.

Oh Jack, that was hilarious! I've just been telling my wife about it and its many predecessors.

I canl swing round on Wednesday or Thursday to watch the 3rd test. Which suits best?

Either!

5 - 82! Winning the toss is supposed to guarantee victory in England. What was Marsh thinking - we needed Watson for his good looking 20 odd.

Watson has had his 50 chances time for some young blood.

Another interesting day of cricket in the roller coaster that is the Ashes ^&grin^&grin^&grin

No idea what tomorrow will bring

Anderson bowled well and England had the luck with edges being found, which didn't happen at Lords. The Australians, Rogers aside, simply failed to knuckle down and didn't bat with discipline. It is strange to see both teams play so poorly straight after winning their previous game easily.

I alluded to the toss earlier. There was some stat that over the last three (?) series, all wins except one, went to the team winning the toss? If anyone recalls it more accurately please post. Regardless, this game looks like it'll be an exception to that 'rule'.
