AWI Question - How do you solve a problem like BR41? (1 Viewer)

I am putting together a new diorama and have a problem of what to do with this figure (BR41), of which I have x10 of.

I bought these to use as my front rank, going by the traditional images of a kneeling front rank, however as I read up on and researched more of the British armies tactics in America, I realised that both ranks stood to fire and using these figures would look out of place. :rolleyes2:

Therefore what do you think I should do with these figures, it seems a waste of money not to use them at all but that is what I am inclined to do as I don't have a huge diorama board and I am limited as to what scenarios I could set up. As they are battalion men, I cannot use them as skirmishers.^&confuse

I cannot sell them and replace them for x10 standing firing figures, as this series has been retired. Maybe I should just cut my losses, box them up and stick them in the attic...{sm2}

You could still use them, M'Lud, with a bit of license. I agree, the manual of arms underwent revision as it met with the tactical reality in North America, but I do think the formal drill still called for locking on with three ranks, where possible. It will probably also depend on the accounts you have as your resources, for any particular action. I don't think it will detract from any display.

Also, there's the collector's aspect--you need these figures to have as complete a collection as possible

OUT of place????

Nope, I don't thnk so, not a bit. Like you, I have dozens each of kneeling/firing British, Hessians and others. I intend to place them in the front ranks as well as in other scenes kneeling behind logs and fench posts and such. They are superb looking figures. In fact, when folks look at my diorama (just starting to build) most people like the kneeling rather than standing, expecially in the firing ranks.

Like theBaron said, what is stated as the formal tactical procedure and "what actually happened" is debatable, expecially after the first few battles. For the British, this was different kinda' war. Heck, after the second or third volley who knows what they did.

I have been to dozens of AWI "re-enactments" and both sides take a knee during the battle. I do have the luxury of have a huge space for my dio. I live in a 1799 (one time) large farm house. So, I get a whole attic space for my toys. The diorama is planned to be on a 4' X 8' base (maybe two!! )

That question brings up another debatable question of the issues of "Historical Accuracy" vs. having fun and a GREAT looking display. I will always opt for the latter.

I'll check my library of AWI books which show hundres of paints, drawings and such and get back to you.

I also think you should use them as your front rank. They are great looking figures, and the two ranks should look very imposing. I always feel free to use artistic license with my figures.

Follow up -- I did a quick search on Google and Bing (Images) and I found some "paintings" and "drawings" showing both Colonial and British in the kneeling position, firing!

Are the paintings and drawings accurate and historical???? You would never convince me that the British soldiers stood during an entire battle!

I can say from a militaristic standpoint and a re-enacting standpoint that from the kneeling position you cannot load as quickly and it often didn't happen as much as many believe. Officers had control over their soldiers and did what they pleased in battle. So I would still use the soldiers for a front rank because it did happen, it just wasn't as practical because you could move quicker and load quicker standing.

Thanks everyone, I needed to hear these comments, I think I will move a few walls around and have them firing from behind one and keep using these figures on my display.

I am still waiting for the Britains 18th century barn to be released, a few more figures and some grass mats before I am finished with this diorama, but will look forward to getting some pictures of here when ready for you to see.
