Just tuned in CNN. This morning in Hawaii received that false emergency alert. False alert, but until recognized as such really scared the crap out of people who received it on twitter. Anybody else see this?

That should keep CNN occupied for three or four days with intense analysis around the clock. Pundits scrambling with scenarios. On the scene interviews from grandmothers, new brides and examples of poi gone sour.

I don't suppose they will mention that the Hawaii Emergency Management system is a siren with specific patterns and tones. Not Twitter.

It's a push alert system which goes out to cell phones and loudspeakers with voice and graphic messages. The alert was widespread.

Yes, businesses are big users of push alert system as it is cheap. And often abused.
No siron, no warning. They test the sirens every month

Hawaii just started the system in November I believe. It's a learning process. I feel sorry
for the guy who pushed the wrong button. Honestly, one button. The US Pacific Command
is in Hawaii. Maybe they should coordinate more.

New job! Not necessarily. I'd get rid of his boss, paid consultants that got big bucks for cheap implementation
and inadequate training. Somebody signed off on the process.

It was a little scary. I live on Maui so I wasn't worried about a direct hit (more likely Pearl Harbor or Barking Sands on Kauai), but more worried about nuclear fallout. I was driving with a friend and told him, "there goes my 401K." 15-minutes till impact is not a lot of time. Cell service was jammed up, but texting worked and let my wife know I wouldn't make it home and would be riding it out at my friend's house. Some sirens went off. He turned on the TV, but there was nothing about a missile attack. That's when we suspected it was a false alarm. Social media was saying it was false alarm, but I wanted more concrete evidence. Over 30-minutes later we got the all clear. I did learn something from this. As soon as you get the attack threat, start collecting water. Once you get nuclear fallout you can not go outside to get water, if water service gets cut off. I have empty water jugs for hurricanes.

Yes it was the usual all day beat a story to death insanity. MSNBC as well as CNN and wherever else.

I miss the newscasts of my childhood. Walter Kronkite's voice made even news from Vietnam and Watergate tolerable.:smile2: There is not a single newscaster on television or the internet today that I trust at all, especially the "news personalities" from Fox, CNN and the other 24 hour news networks.:rolleyes2: They are a bunch of untrustworthy shills.

I can’t imagine how people must have felt.

I was banking on a false alarm or a missile that would splash near Hawaii without a warhead as a show of capability. Nobody wants to die, but with 15-minutes to find out, I just resigned myself that I'll just accept whatever comes. I tell my kids that sometimes in life you just have to be tough. Nuclear fallout would have been a nightmare. Everything would be contaminated. Jets & ships wouldn't be able to deliver goods and aid for awhile. I do belief 90% of our products are from off island. North and South Korea would have been dust.

Incredible incompetence but why do they send these warnings in the first place? There are no bomb shelters and not much anyone can do if there is an inbound nuke. Might as well enjoy your last few minutes laying at the beach. I wonder where exactly all those people were running? To the local bar? They must be having a good laugh in N. Korea.

This event brought to mind an episode of the Twilight Zone where the guy built a bomb shelter in his basement for his family. When they get word that the nukes are on the way his neighbors try to break in but he doesn't have room for them and they end up nearly killing each other. Of course it turns out to be a false alarm.
