Band of brothers iii (1 Viewer)

Guys I for one would love to see either a film or a series made about the Battle for Malta. Can't blame American companies for aiming at American audiences so I'd like to see the BBC/HBO do a joint project on this pivotal battle. With control of the meds shipping lanes this tiny Island took on importance far far above its size. It was a horrific battle with the civilians suffering a prolonged aerial bombing campaign longer in consecutive nights than the London Blitz. As well as the heroic story of the hugely outnumbered RAF pilots facing large bomber raids you also have the knife edge battle to get the convoys through to the beleaguered Island that was very close indeed.

In the meantime the USAAF Bomber raids series will make for some great tv!

Hi Rob,

there was that old movie starring Alec Guinness in "The Malta Story". Pretty good movie if you ask me. I would prefer to see other conflicts being covered, rather than remakes.

Hi Victor,

Yes I have that one in my collection and its a good one. I didn't mean a remake I meant I'd like to see a big budget tv series from BBC/HBO to cover this conflict in the way B.O.B/Pacific was covered previously.

I was intrigued about those two films coming from Jackson, so I had a bit of a look. There's no mention of the Gallipoli one in the last couple of years. It would seem The Hobbit has pushed it out of plans, as The Dambuster's will probably be his next project. Indeed, it seems he's already had 10 full-scale Lancasters built! (I don't think they're flying ones though)

I've said it before but as much as I loved Band of Brothers, I thought The Pacific was a stronger war 'film'. It had scenes of a nature that I never thought could be shown on TV. Some of the set-pieces were astonishing in their scale. I can see the difference in tones between the two shows but I was surprised at the animosity to The Pacific. I thought it deserved a better reception.

The scene where the tanker 'Ohio' arrives shot to bits and tied between two destroyers and they welcome it as a warship is one of the most moving scenes in any British war movie (slightly ahead of Micheal Redgrave as Barnes Wallis when he realises the extent of the casualties on the raid against the dams and slightly behind 'Men of Harlech' in Zulu).

Agreed, that really is a great scene especially moving when you know just how much that tanker meant to people on the Island and how they came out to cheer her into harbour. Surely few Battles have echoed the words of Wellington in that ' It was a close run thing ' like Malta was. That 'Men of Harlech ' scene has indeed got to be one of the most emotional in a War film. Remember my dad took me to see it on the big screen at Leicester Square when I was very small and from then on I was hooked on War films.

I also thought The Pacific was the more interesting and better done series. -- Al

Both were very well made shows but for me BOB was the one I have watched at least five times and the Pacific only once. The Pacific was made in North Queensland and some bits in Melbourne and it was interesting to spot the Aussie actors which seemed to out number the rest.

This is my experience too. I definitely enjoyed Pacific and some of the set piece scenes were terrific, but it did not hook me like BOB . Somehow I didnt care about the characters as I did in BOB.

Hi Rob and all,

big budget movie about the Pacific? They should do one on the most obvious battle - The Fall of Singapore. That would be something.
