It has been 35 years since James McPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom, probably the best one volume history of the Civil War, was published.

The Civil War Monitor has a special section on the book in its latest issue that is very good. Unfortunately, it’s only available online if you’re a subscriber. Otherwise you can buy a copy from them or in bookstores.

Quite agree Brad. One of my favorites and I have a Civil Library better than most small town public libraries. I liked the fact that McPherson concentrated on the decade leading up to the war in the first half of the book. He refreshed my memory of things I'd almost forgotten such as the compromise of 1850.
