My daughter and I watched the movie and it's the 4th... 5th time for me. I haven't been able to to figure out the Susannah York/ Christopher Plummer relationship AND the movie just leaves them hanging with him injured in a crash.

Does the kid that Micheal Cane tutors in tactics die or is he the one that later calls the new pilots "kids" toward the end?

I get that Ian McShane moves in with Robert Shaw's family. The movie is fun to watch but leaves it's characters sketchy and hanging.

I think one and two are sort of left up to the viewers imagination of what could happen. Point two I think if I have the right character is the guy who at the end is teaching the 'new boys' how to fly so, does survive against the early odds against.

Anymore depth about the characters would have lost some of the combat scenes which, were always to be the crux of the film.

Can't be beaten IMO a great film

The film was about the battle, the characters reflect those times in that they are transient. People appeared and disappeared, often without explanation and a rookie became a veteran very quickly or died. As in life there are always loose threads, nothing is ever tied up neatly.
