Watching this in the background and, got to the bit where the British Ambassador loses his temper and finds it unforgivable.

'We know how hard it is for an army to cross the channel the last corporal who tried it came a cropper' What a line!!!!

Thats how we won 'stiff upper lip' this is the second time this week I have watched this. Excellent film... truly excellent.

Fantastic isn't it, so good. I also love the line about 'Not dictating to us until you are marching up whitehall...and even then we won't listen'!;)

When you think of how much nerve and bottle both the the leaders and the people had to have in those summer months as the news from France grew worse and then the ever present danger of invasion, what a generation they were.

Must say I don't often feel for the Nazi's, but that scene in which the Stuka Pilot is dead and his gunner can't get out, much have been awful. Also that Heinkel 111 crewman hit by a bullet in the stomach, can you imagine a bullet from a fighter plane in your stomach, not nice.

Wonderful film, makes me very proud everytime I watch it, and this year it has even more effect.

At the first ariel fight now brave men on both sides but, agree must not have been nice to face a two second burst from 8 machine guns. They get my respect but not sympathy. Little blighters got the butt slapping they well and truly deserved.

Absolutely agree, I respect they were doing their duty as their country asked and the bravery it took, but no sympathy whatever, they were trying to force their sickening doctrine on our country, and as you say they got a country arse kicking they fully deserved. Hitler and Goering grossly underestimated this country's defiance and determination, big error.

I have the DVD right next to me on the shelf. It's another "cult film" for US reenactors. Susannah York's knickers are memorable.

Well you all know how much I like this film; a glance at my signature says it all. It is one of the few war films that realistically portrays aerial combat of that period. There are so many great scenes but I especially like the one with Canfield's (Caine) "you'll be in a barrel if you don't watch for those fighters" line and of course the scene with Skipper's (Shaw) classic "DON'T THINK! Don't just glance! LOOK! Search for the b**t**ds! OK, let's try it again". Of course there a many, many more; I watch it 3 or 4 times a year.;):D

Couldn't agree more. And the famous battle scene near the end of the film with just the musical score, is fantastic, exciting and moving all at once. Brilliant scenes, brilliant music, my favourite war film ever, and considering how much I enjoy Zulu thats saying something.

There is also just something about the Spitfire that is almost alive, the scenes in which you see three of them together following a bomber are just great.

10/10

Rob...

Your so right a scene in a film with just music would not work in any other film I could think of. You almost feel your in the spit firing at the germans. I still pause and play back a few times to hear the merlins roar.
