Battle of the Hurtgen Forest............ (1 Viewer)

Well, I was looking at all those nice square mats pushed together and I thought, “Gee, that looks like the German countryside I just flew over 3 hours ago!”

Like the setups George. And I think I just flew over Hurtgen on my way into Frankfurt.

72 hours ago I got a great view of Normandy from 30,000 feet. I was a little closer to Hurtgen, I believe.

Thanks Larry, glad you like my set up...………...did some reading on Hurtgen; roughly 33K US casualties, then the Bulge after that, roughly 75K casualties, that's about 110K casualties in about 4 months of fighting, roughly 1,000 casualties a day.

What a slaughter...…………….

My hosts in Frankfurt took us to an old hunting lodge for dinner called the Oberschweinstiege. It’s deep in some woods that are just overwhelming. You understand why the Romans called them the Black Forests of Germania. Big trees, with big leaves that just keep going up and up.

I am used to the Appalachian forests but something is so much darker here. You really get a sense of why they were so effective for the defenders. Big trees with thick canopy over thick undergrowth.
