Needing some advice. Over the holiday's my 13 year old informed me he's hooked on the Battle of Waterloo. Looking for something Illustrated with maps, diagrams, battle drawings, personalities Etc. I came across this book which looks out of print. Any thoughts on this book? Looks good from what I've read. Pricy but if its good I'll grab it.

Any good? I've watched their Battlefield series which I'm very Impressed with. I'm a WW2 guy and this is a new road for me.
Thanks in advance for any help and recommendations one can offer.

The Adkins book is a good one as it includes all aspects from weapons to uniforms to tactics, strategy, the armies, etc. It is one of a series that Adkins has done including Trafalgar, Gettysburg, The Western Front. There are minor errors here and there in all of the works but generally they are good reference works, and they are excellently illustrated. However, a quick check on prices would seem to indicate that the book is overpriced on the secondary market, but that is just my opinion. -- Al

For a younger reader David Howarth’s ‘A Near Run Thing’ is an older book but a great introductory read.

The Waterloo Uncovered group who are excavating around the battlefield have some excellent stories and lectures on YouTube that are well worth a look.

I'll second the Adkins book; it's my go to book for Waterloo, maps, uniform plates, weapons, tactics, on and on it goes; yes, some minor errors, but it's the bible for the battle if you ask me.

Did not know it was out of print............................

Adkins book (which I have) is the most complete book on Waterloo I believe, 400+ pages. It is a detailed reference book.

It is comprehensive in terms of campaign, order of battle, command control, battlefield, infantry, cavalry, artillery, other arms and services, the high lights and myths and controversies.

The maps are highly detailed and there are recent photos of the terrain so you can appreciate the ground the battle was fought on. Including the ‘sunken lane’.

The writing style and format make it an easy read, lots of illustrations and you can dive in detail of the configuration of an artillery unit or read the broad brush overview of Neys cavalry attack. It also has quotes from participants.

As it is out of print, the price will be what it is.

An alternative would be Osprey’s Campaigns Waterloo 1815; it has useful maps and colour images of uniforms and is a good starting point.

I have not read the Snow book but heard Jon Snow talk about Wellington at Britain’s Greatest General debate and he is a great story teller and very knowledgeable.

I've found it on Amazon for under 2 Bills. Figured I'd grab some input from the forum members before pulling the trigger. Some books are just the go to book regarding a battle which is what I'm looking for. Have several fitting that bill for WW2. I don't mind paying a little extra if it meets the bill. I'm excited that he's into the Battle and learning more about it. For that I'm willing to pay a bit more for it. His brother is a WW2 nut like me so I'm happy he's on board.
